I think the wedding would be a pretty huge story had the Boston thing not happened, FWIW

Did you just accidentally advance a conspiracy theory?

This was a brilliant place for a terrorist attack because the Boston Marathon has to be one of the biggest melting pots of rich white people imaginable. While I don't think I personally knew anyone competing, I know people that have and was one degree of separation from at least a dozen competitors.

that's why this hits with so many people, I think.

The setting might have brilliant but their timing was very stupid if they were trying to prove some point.

I hate to get analytical about this, but they a probably got closer to the maximum emotional impact with relatively few deaths. Maybe they didn't want to kill many people?

I would be willing to bet the starting line had a lot tighter security than the finish line.

I don't see how.  27,000 ppl all carrying some sort of pack or bag.  If the news was correct yesterday saying this was dropped off in backpacks, I don't think it would have been stopped.

As to the jakesie v daris thing:

I feel like this is one of these debates that's only a debate on a message board. I don't think there is anyway that there would be much back and forth on this if it was an in-person conversation. Everyone agrees that life is precious and everyone agrees that media coverage and human emotion are dictated by proximity.

:dunno: definitely possible, I bet we find out that it was some rogue without much of a definitive plan

Neither place has tight security at all. There is a uniformed presence but there is very little restriction of movement, both the start and finish lines are in commercial areas that obviously have their biggest day on Patriots Day. At both places the streets are fenced in and there are gates to enter and exit but on the sidewalks its normal fare.

You can't stop people from walking on the sidewalk and putting stuff in trashcans.

JFC. The wedding thing would be a big story if its wasn't a hoax linking to an article from 2002. Good rough ridin' grief.

Also, it's not illegal to carry two backpacks and at a finish line of such a race, there has to be a bunch of supporters there with stuff to give the runners like food, water, clothes, etc.  There was probably bags all over the place.

I just don't see how this could be prevented without getting super weird and violating a bunch of rights.

there's 80+ injured. I bet the Afghan wedding got more press in Afghanistan than the Boston thing.

The only reason it got any press in Afghanistan was because so many dumb fucks fell for a hoax.

I enjoy how jaksie was so outraged about the Afghan wedding bombing not getting any press that he couldn't even be bothered to read about it.  "How dare Americans not care about this as I link it and don't read it myself! :shakesfist:"

There is no better time to kick a man than when he's down unless you're some sort of karate guy.  Those are facts.

Those are truly words to live by. Also, Homer Simpson believes you should kick a man in the back after he turns his back on you in disgust, so there's that.
