am i a horrible person?
« on: April 15, 2013, 03:35:28 PM »
new thread so that the boston explosion thread isn't messed with.

people on facebook are going on and on about what a tragedy it is, and how they are sick to their stomach.  i know that facebook posts are normally an over-the-top gut reaction, but i see things like that after any horrific event.

i don't ever get "sick to my stomach" about stuff.  i see what happened, say "bummer," and move on with my day.  is this not normal?  i crack jokes about deaths on here, but IRL i don't make jokes, i just don't really care about those things.

I'm about the same.

Sucks that it happened, glad it wasn't worse, kill whoever did it, move on.

I don't ever get that sick to the stomach reaction people have?  :dunno:

I get pretty sick to my stomach, but I can understand how some people don't.
I think what my friend Mitch is trying to say is that true love is blind.

i'm somewhere in between. not totally numb, but i also (right or wrong) feel that people post crap sometimes to make themselves look super caring and all that. seems fake some of the time. probably cynical of me.

I think it depends a lot on the person and how exposed they were/are to things in the world.  Screwed up things happen every day, but if you don't really deal with or know they happen you are not able to just 'shrug' off something like this. Other people can just move on rather easily from stuff like this bombing.

Oh, it is super fake, and I avoid facebook at all costs during times like this.

Vice versa. Some ppl take the chance to try and be edgy/I don't care mentality at times like this so they can let everyone know how much "they don't give a crap" about stuff like this. Goes both ways.

"Oh you feel bad about terrorism huh? What about that time you picked on John Richards in high school because he got de-pantsed and we saw his junk? That seems pretty ok compared to this huh?"

It is annoying when people go all public about how bad they feel blah blah.  It's kind of an attention grab and brag about how in touch with the world they are and competition to see how many likes and comments they can get all at once.

i doubt all people are like that.  i mean, i started this thread and i'm not trying to get attention.  just not sure how the rest of g.E reacts to events like this.  the people i'm related to/know are pretty pud and get emotional about everything.

I was mainly thinking facebook and twitter.  You were honest, the ones I am thinking about (there are like 5 ppl I think of) are trying to see who can have the best #bostonmarathon #rip #prayforrunners hashtag fest and get likes/favorites.

Man, I sound like the bad person now...

It tells me that there are impacts of these types of events that you either don't understand or don't want to deal with on an emotional level.  Neither makes you a bad person, but it certainly doesn't speak well of you either.

Yes, there are plenty of people on FB and Twitter that want attention for being overly emotional

This and I feel sick.  I made the mistake of checking FB and saw a dozen, pray for boston status updates by people that rarely use facebook like they're being progressive about a tragedy.  I won't go back to fb or twitter for 24 hours.  It's too much bs and I prefer to not rely on social media for news.

I have a hard time contemplating the idea that someone thinks it is okay to do this to other people. That makes me profoundly sad. However, when people I don't have a connection to die, it doesn't really shake me too much.

i don't have to deal with this on an emotional level.  people that i don't know were injured/killed in a city that i've been to once and nothing about today's event will ever impact my life.   :dunno:  people die everyday.  it's awful that innocent lives were taken like that, but i'm not going to go into depression about it.

meh

no one said you had to go into depression about what's gone on, but reacting to innocent people dying by simply saying "bummer" seems overtly flippant.

I'm more interested or shocked than sad.   Newtown is the only "tragedy" that has ever effected me in more than a curious about the details fashion.   I also recognize that I'm not a normal person.

If it was like a puppy race instead of a human race, and puppies were bombed instead, I would be pretty emotional.
