Take the one with fewer hours. No matter how great your job is, if the rest of your life is less fun than your job, you are doing it wrong.

Any job at a staffing agency has to be really boring and simple.

But being a salesman sounds terrible too.

I'm in the keep looking camp.

WC, tell your friend that he probably has more room to move up at a software co than a staffing co.  Also, if he/she ever decides that they like the work but not the employer, they might have more oppy to find another similar gig.

Also, all else being equal, your friend should not pick the one with a lot of hours.

WC, you can probably attest to this for your friend, but sales can be pretty awesome if they enjoy meeting ppl and are good at creating positive impressions/relationships.

Which job will allow you internet access without anyone looking over your shoulder to see how often you are on gE?

Part 1 of two pieces of advice:

When deciding between two jobs, always choose the job where you will learn and grow the most.   I received this advice before I chose my first job, and took the job that paid less initially, and it was the best decision of my life.

Unless the job with more money is a necessity (food, shelter, safety), rule out money and base your decision on professional growth opportunities.

Part 2 of two pieces of advice:

If two jobs provide comparable professional growth opportunities, always choose the job that offers more money (benefits should be included in the "money" calculation).

Money (or other benefits that are in lieu of money, but are also valuable) is the way employers express your worth to them.

THIS IS EVEN MORE IMPORTANT WHEN THE TWO JOBS YOU ARE CHOOSING BETWEEN ARE DIFFERENT ROLES IN THE SAME FIRM.  Money is the employer's scorecard.

Good advice pete.

I always say take the job that will look best on your resume when you apply for a new job.

the software place seems like they might have better results at searching the web for your friend's internet history, since your friend was a dumbass and put his name all over the place.

An offer is not an interview, it is an offer.  Which means, if your friend says "yes", he will become an employee.

OK Cat has a pretty good point, though. If Fanning's friend wants to take that offer, he had better hurry up before that offer gets withdrawn.

Software sales can be very exciting. I may be going to Omaha soon.

being in sales seems like it would be only half a step better than being an HR person.  dealing with people isn't a strong suit of mine though.

Do any of these jobs require your friend to make decisions on his own/while he doesn't have Internet access? Seems like that may put your friend in a pickle

If you are a good ppl person, have a good product, know the product well, and can deliver what you promise, sales can be fun as well as extremely financially rewarding given the right arrangement with your employer.

how could you possibly know if that was the better decision?  there is no telling what would have happened had you chosen a different path.

Does this company make software or sell software?  That makes a big difference.

I would say both would be flexible. I'm not gonna lie, I've heard great things about dsi, but I have the feeling it will be pretty stressful to start with. I've heard there's a lot of travel ops with the company. They take employees to Vegas a lot.

Money (or other benefits that are in lieu of money, but are also valuable) is the way employers express your worth to them.

equally important dual perspective: money is the way you express your worth to employers.  When you accept any job, you implicitly agree with the company on the value of your labor.  This ripples through every job you take in the future.  of course, having better opportunity for advancement or learning new skills which will demonstrably increase your value at a lower paying job are fine alternatives.
