we are doing a gas fireplace but if it was up to me we would do no fireplace at all. mrs. dave likes them for some reason. I'd rather just fire up the furnace or throw some wood on a pile out back and sit around it.

that's cool. what about a swimming pool though? you guys should probably get one and then during cws, mrs sd could go somewhere else like to her sisters or something and then you could host katpak cws pool conventions/parties.

neighborhood pool about 50 yards away  :gocho:

@pete better start getting his little speakers and music ready. looks like we have another pool to take over.

Hey steve dave be weary of "builder's grade" paint in some areas.  Use good crap in bathrooms (Kilz) and other high traffic areas.

Also, just rough ridin' tile from the top of your showers/baths to the ceiling.  Don't put paint there.

Honestly, this should be code.  Stupid to do just paint, regardless of the grade.

As far as cheap vs expensive paint, the biggest issues is actually thickness of coat.  Many painters do as thin of a coat as possible and usually only one.  They tint their primer so that if it shows through it isn't very obvious.   It isn't an issue if you are like I am in that the first thing you do in a house is completely change the color basically every where and then do it all again every few years.

Also, don't get flat paint.  they will say it is easier to clean and touch up, but my personal experience says that is rough ridin' stupid.  Get a satin finish.  Not horribly glossy, cleans easy, and I have never had much issue touching up.

lol at my vivid flashbak of you saying "oh crap, that's NWA" and jumping out of the pool and sprinting over to the speakers and then just shooting the crap with that old guy that asked us to turn it down about 5 times.

Mennonites are always the right choice, they dispense with the formalities.  My parents used them to build their cabin, and my best friend from HS has a wonderful experience with them building his big new place.  I figure they have to be pretty much the same in NE.

my parents built an enormous addition to our house growing up and used them. it was great, they just charge by the hour and you supply the materials or whatever but instead of sneaking back and finding them trashed on busch light they are actually hitting nails with hammers and crap.

OK, the house is going to face SSW (annoying curvy neighborhood). The deck is going to be facing NNE on the "right" corner of the house. There is a window from the eat in kitchen area on the SWW side the deck and a sliding glass door on the SSW side of the deck. We have included in the build the deck being covered by extending the roof over it or whatever. Is that a bad idea give the direction the house faces? I'm worried it will block all the natural light getting into the kitchen. It will for sure block the sun getting into that eat in kitchen area window. I'm also worried it will block a lot of light getting into the kitchen windows perpendicular to the one that looks onto the deck. It would also save us about $5k to not cover the deck. But, I like covered decks a lot. THOUGHTS?

Can you flip the house to make the layout a mirror image of itself(what was on right is now on left)?

I don't think so, but I'll ask. seems like they told me it had to be like that for some reason.

If it was me, I would still cover the deck.  That said, I love being on my deck during bad weather as well as July and August.

sd, this is important. Plant trees and shrubs in your front yard now. You will want some wind protection ASAP.

also drop the sliding glass door, those are only found in ghettos.  french door for your deck is correct choice.

can't, would have preferred it but it opens directly to the butler's pantry area and it would open across the lane of traffic and be weird. it would be cheaper for a regular door or two as well.
