I know most Lawrence residents who live near the stadium are able to drill shallow wells and water their lawns for free

We did it in Wellington thirty years ago. Had a little pump house in the front yard. As others noted, pretty common to see there. Don't see it so much here in KY. Grass stays pretty green without watering.

I know of biz's with sprinklers in KCMO that get a second meter specifically just for watering the lawn because they don't pay some sewer tax on the water spent on the lawn, and the second meter is the only way to actually prove the quantity not hitting the drain.
I absolutely need to do this. I don't mind paying for the water but eff man it's not going in the sewer. That accounts for a large portion of my bill.

wtf don't you drill a well? everyone in ict i know has one.

Wells in our area are hit or miss. Might hit one that is awesome and might hit one that is horrible.  No guarantee.  In west Wichita you can dig your own well with a sharpshooter not so much in Kechi.

Who has the witching sticks?
Some houses in urban NC have their own wells for both potable and non-potable use.

people who have sprinkler systems - how do these things work? is there like an on/off switch somewhere? timer? is your water bill bananas?

Don't most people with sprinkler systems have private wells?  I can't imagine running the sprinkler system off metered water.

lol wut

so you're saying your system is run off of metered water?  Honestly, this is suprising to me. I can not think of a person I have met that has a house less than 20 years old that has a sprinkler system running off of metered water.

yes. my current house (built in 2014) and my old house (built in 2005) both had sprinkler systems on metered water. I have 7 zones and run the living crap out of the systems and my bill is about $30 a month in the middle of summer and almost nothing when we aren't running it the rest of the season. water costs almost nothing here. we are neighbors with flood city, USA though.

holy cow, that is amazingly cheap

Water is super cheap in some places.  Probably most of this blog's readership has access to super cheap water.

water is hella expensive here.  and everyone has an irrigation system.  lawns are pretty small by midwestern standards, so most people adopt a goodly section of sidewalk and street and water that too.

Oh Man! It wasn't too long ago around KC that a bunch of landscape designers were pushing Buffalo Grass super hard to a bunch of biz's building new buildings.  Saying it never had to be cut and looked good and stuff.  Pffft.  It is a mother to get started, so they all spend a bunch of money on excess top soil, treatments, and water to get it started, and now that it is in place in a couple places, it just looks like really tall grass that needs to be cut super bad.

PPl should look into grey water systems and rainwater collection when building a new house rather than drilling wells, imo.

Ya look into it but when the money doesn't make sense just water your lawn like everybody else.

(Inside my balls I am a supporter CNS, but it needs to work in Cali before it can work in fly over country.  Probably our kids will do it that way.)

Well, if ppl are drilling wells in Wichita and those cost more than $3K, it would be a decent thing to look into, imo.

3k will get you 30 or 40 feet deep, which will find water in a lot of places. That's a simple depth that 1 or 2 people can drill to easily. Beyond that, rigs get bigger, need more people to operate etc.

Like people in the city limits of Hutch be drilling wells?

We built a house two years ago on the northern edge of the city (still well in city limits). Private wells for watering (and sometimes for the whole house) is pretty common here.

Our well was around 1200 but the driller was a customer of ours, so there may have been a discount in there. Typical regular water bill for us is 80 a month, but that includes sewer and trash service.  Didn't have a well (or sprinkler system) at the old house, so the lawn was rarely watered off the meter, but I know just filling the above ground pool (don't have one of those anymore) could double the bill for a month.

Just looked it up and the sewer and water portion of the bill was 40. (three kids and a wife, including a teenage girl that loves long showers).

Does that include the pump, install, commissioning, etc?

hell, my water bill will be $250-400 in July and August if I run it even half-assed to keep the grass from totally browning out.   We pay a 25% stormwater surcharge though because of the lake stormwater district.   :curse:

You sir, need a well.

We water twice a day.  I guess there is extra electricity costs, but probably cheaper than the water would be.

Probably looks better than a $400 water bill
