I am shocked (shocked) that Steve Dave hasn't specifically asked for @KSUBrian to come in here an offer some real advice. Really clear things up, you know?

Also, SD, for your landscaping that can't be reached by the sprinklers (assuming it's shrubs and flowers and stuff), you should def get some soaker hoses that attach to your regular hose. Turn on the hose, go inside, come back out 45 minutes later and turn 'em off.  That seems like the right level of "work" for our old pal SD, though it might affect the neighborlady/Miller Lite aluminums a little bit.

If turning the hose on and off is too hard, you could even get an automatic timer.

That doesn't apply to your sod though, if it gets dry that crap will die.

SD rethink your position on buying shitty lawn equipment (mower is a good choice).  If you get a good trimmer like a Stihl, Echo, or Husc your yard work wont be as much of a burden.  If you are the type which will always see it as a burden, just get a service now.  If you might grow into it, buy decent equipment now.  No one says oh I wish I didn't buy my Stihl Chainsaw or Echo trimmer even though they cost a crap load.  They cost that much because they work so much better and make your life easier.

Cedar deck, metal spindles, pressure treated frame. What do I need to do with this thing? Stain it this year? Next?

No need to wait.  I like this stuff.  Wipe it on, let it sit a couple minutes, wipe it off.  Looks good and water/rain just beads up on it.  Also no need to strip or chemically clean prior to reapplication, just sweep and hose the dirt off.  Put 2 or 3 coats on and you shouldn't have to again for a couple years.

Hey, homebuildercats. Is it hard to install a fan in a bathroom? Do you have to, like, hire a guy? Do you have to know stuff about electricity and whatnot? I feel like I want to learn this kind of stuff but sometimes I feel like this guy instead.

If you have access to the attic above the bathroom it's pretty pud too. If it's got living space above it then you're kinda mumped

Don't know. Just thinking hypothetically. I watched a video on The Info Superhighway that made replacing one indeed look pud. But I still have a couple questions about putting one in, just because there are a bunch of old-ass homes and I'm in the house market right now so who knows if I'll have to do it.

1. Putting one in looks easy if it's on an upstairs floor and goes through an exhaust duct in the attic. But what it it's on the first floor? Where does it all go? Shoot it into the ground underneath your house?

2. Will I have to hire an electrician to put a new switch or wires or whatever in the wall? Or is that stuff already in there and I just have to twist some stuff together?

That's what I feared. But my parents' house has one in their downstairs bathroom and there's definitely a living space right above that so wtf :don'tcare:

Yes, this stuff is great. Two years ago I sanded all of the crappy contractor finishes (polyurethane with stain in it) off my wood garage and entry doors and used the redwood TWP. Looks great. Super low maintenance.

As long as the circuit has capacity, you should be able to wire it right off the light. Whether that is pud or not is dependent on your home's configuration.

Are we talking about

Or a recessed exhaust fan?

If its the former, its pretty pud.  But since that doesn't make much since to install in a bathroom i imagine you mean the latter.

Most of the headache for that kind of operation is just the design.  So you want to pull out air from the bathroom?  Where do you want to put it?  You need to figure out how to get air from your power source (where you'll install the unit) to where it needs to go (rafters? exterior?)   As seven said, if you just have adduct above, then its just installing and a 1 foot vent to the adduct... otherwise, you need to snake some ducting to where you need to go, which can be a pain.  If you have sheet-rock, you can count on being able to run from the rafter between your bathroom and the upstairs to the side of the house and there should some room to run the duct up to the adduct or even out of the house

The bad news is to run anything like that you'll need to rip out anything in the way...
