You men have it easy. Try having a friend selling Pampered Chef or those fabric purse things or Premier Designs jewelry.

Not only are you expected to buy their crap at prices twice as high as what you would buy somewhere else, you're supposed to host "parties" to help your friend.
The worst.

Would love to go to a passion part with my wife's friends (but like not my wife because that could be weird if she got fixated on the huge black veiny one).

Passion parties are also horrible and weird. But at least part of the party scheme is lots and lots of booze, because you have to be drunk to buy that stuff in front of your friends. (Or really at all.)

I am incredibly mean to my wife's acquaintances after she dodges having a party for them and they don't give up.

Leaches.   Like I am supposed to gaf that this new arbon bullshit will help them stay home with their kids.

Nope.

interviewed for a job last year and was told that when i started i would be required to write down 300 names of people that i know. then i would have to call each one of those people.  :frown:

I would have just got up and left.

Yep.

My friends know what I do.  If they need anything from me,  they know my number.

There is a string of posts on this page that are making me really nervous about my future  :frown:. I don't want to be an annoying insurance salesman. But that's financial planning in a nutshell.

Welp, I just won't be annoying I 'spose?
no.  it's not.

yeah...let me rephrase that.  it's not if you do it right.  most "financial planners" are just glorified salesmen.  if you do it right, you're no more of a salesman than a cpa or attorney.  we've never called anyone asking for their business, we work purely on referrals, and we don't work with friends.  but yeah...if you work for an insurance company, you're going to be an insurance salesman.  and please, for the love of god, don't refer to yourself as a financial planner.

I should rephrase. The company that I want to work for deals in mostly planning, but they are a subsidiary of Guardian.

Was it Northwestern Mutual? I had an interview for an internship with them after my freshman year and it was very obvious that it was a scheme.

no but i also had a friend intern for them and badgered not only me, but asked me for names of anyone i knew.

so it's just as bad when that person calls a friend of yours and says "hey i got your name from your friend, _______."

he was a really good friend, was very awkward and i didn't want to not help him.  :embarrassed:

Yeah I had a friend that referred me to them. At the time I was super excited, because it is a well known company and an internship that practically fell into my lap, but I didn't want to badger my friend's parents/parent's friends and so I just took another summer job. Turns out the friend that referred me hated the whole thing and made very little from them that summer.

I've had 2 friends get involved in Quixstar. One was a guy from highschool who never went to college, he was in manhattan for a meeting and I actually went with him because I had not seen him in 1 year....Meeting goes like this

1. LOOK AT ALL THIS MONEY
2. Build your business!
3. Testimonial about how much money they make from person in crowd who was likely planted.
4. How much money do you want to make? GO MAKE IT!!!

The other guy who got caught up in it was pretty smart, graduated in bio/chem or something at KSU. He called me one night over the summer while I was slamming brews and playing video games. As soon as he told me what the business was I laughed in his face and told him to quit now.

Have friends getting into Herbalife. Most of them are non-finance types who just get sucked into the pitch

that's not planning.  you'll be pushed to sell guardian policies regardless of whether they're the best for the client. trust me.  find a firm that's truly independent or find a different industry.

I had the same thing happen with NW Mutual.  Went in for the interview/recruiting scam because I figured interview experience wouldn't hurt, and at the end they asked for 10 names and numbers.  I gave them legit names, but changed the phone number by a digit.  The interviewer was a pretty hot ex-EMAW cheerleader though, so we talked 'Cats for a bit.

Got the Quixstar pitch three times.  First time was an interview for a "marketing/business internship" (pyramid scheme) the summer after my freshman year.  Second time, a college roommate got in to it and gave the pitch to me and the 2 other roommates as we  :dubious: and  at him.

The third time, and old high school friend/acquaintance asked me and another buddy to help him move some furniture pretty early on a Saturday morning.  This [redacted] had us move one couch across the room and maybe a chair, then sat us down and gave us some of the Quixstar sports drinks and tried to start in on the pitch.  We basically told him to eff off, and left right away.  Don't think I've talked to him since.

It's like "Oh I bet you are thirsty after that 30 seconds of work while you are all hungover.  Sit down, have a sports drink, and let me tell you about this dumbass pyramid scheme so maybe I can get back some of the money I've wasted"

It's always a hot girl. Always.

I worked at the nut company kiosk in Oak Park in high school and my boss kept trying to make me sell this Verve energy drink crap to my football/rugby teams. I was like uhh, no thanks. Gatorade is fine.

funny story, I stopped by the liquor store on amex small business saturday and told the cashier I needed 7 $25 gift cards and I was going to use 7 different credit cards.  the cashier was kind of confused and a little skeptical.  just then a client walked up behind me to check out.  I was all :horrorsurprise:  I tried to play it cool and tell him he could go ahead of me.  he was a bit confused and I told him I was just buying a gift card and they had to figure out how to do it.  he was all "gift card...nice choice!"

Not really, I'm pretty sure that the next people that came in probably moved the coach back to the other side of the living room.

When my Quixtar friend came back from his conference in Kentucky, he completely stopped drinking because "people see you when you go out and they aren't going to buy your products if they know you drink." He also started going to church, which wouldn't have been a big deal except he was pretty much only doing it to meet potential clients.

Looks like it.  It was a very stud move in the sense that he used our good will and kindness to trick us into sitting through 30 seconds of his sales pitch before never talking to him ever again.
