The same pitcher can pitch two different times in the same ballgame as long as there are 6 defensive outs between the two appearances. What if he pitches the first two and the last three?

One, I can't recall that ever happening before. Seems like it would be hard to stay warm/loose.  Also, five innings is probably too many.  I want to reach the CWS as much as anyone but I don't want to ruin a freshman's arm. Now, if he was a senior...

I just googled it. They can't do what I said they could. Once they leave, they are done. I think what I said was the way it used to be back in pee wee baseball.

Yeah, it didn't sound right but rules change so much I didn't feel comfortable saying you were wrong.

Could, I think, if he stayed in the game as like a right fielder or something

I guess McFadden closes last 2 inning with Esquivel for middle relief?  Maybe Matthys has his breaking stuff working today?

I assume we're hoping for 3 innings from him, anything more is gravy.

I just hope we keep the rough ridin' ball down today. Also, what would the game have looked like if we had just got that third out in the first before all hell broke loose. We need to step on their throats early and regain the swagger from them.

I could see more than three innings if he's pitching well.  It's not like they need to save his arm for tomorrow.  I like the move.  We are at a complete disadvantage in starting pitching.  This shakes things up and is not what Oregon State was expecting to see.

On one day rest, he won't be able to last more than 3. It's not so much about saving him as it is just regular wear and tear adding up. Everytime you throw a ball you break X amount of capillaries, etc.

Maybe a glimmer of hope is the last time we lost like this (13-2) against WVU basically kick started our season into a conference championship  :emawkid:

Cheesy Mustache QB might make an appearance.

Personally I would start the game off with Williams for probably 2 innings and then go to Matthys in the 3rd. The positive of going with Matthys early is you can max out his innings if he has a great day. If he throws a 8 pitch inning than you can probably extend him to 4 innings instead of just the expected 3.

With the announcement of Matthys  I think it will go like this.

Matthys for 4
Esquivel for 2
Williams for 2 and
Witt for 1

Witt is the guy with the most saves after Matthys but this is a really weird situation because Witt hasn't pitched in a long time. I know he didn't pitch during the Big 12 tournament or Regional. Flattery is the other guy I am expecting might see action.

Look for a complete game shutout from Matthys.  You can take that prediction to the bank.
