We will always suck more than we dint as long as known loser Pete Hughes is our coach.

Guess who doesn't suck? No. 22 Maryland, which is led by a coach who doesn't have 25 years of mostly failure at the D1 level. In fact, after this year, Maryland's coach will only be one NCAA appearance behind Pete Hughes (in 20 fewer years as a head coach).

DB is ranked 19th.

Maryland is 18-5, swept Baylor to start the season.    They did lose to Michigan and East Carolina who have solid programs.

Will be an interesting follow.

K-State - if they don't find some pitching, fielding, fundamentals and you know, just about everything real quick.   Is looking down the barrel of 0-12 in conference.

Football-Volleyball-Men's Basketball-Baseball

The renovations at TFS are a big improvement.    The baseball program is about to get access to a new 22K square strength and sports medicine facility just over the left field wall.   They're talking about an expansion and renovation of Brandeberry.      Come on man.

I'm so tired of the excuses.    People act like the SEC schools and Stillwater Oklahoma, North Texas are some sort of tropical paradise and that MHK is the freaking frozen tundra.   Unless you're in South Florida the winters in the South are only slightly more mild than the Midwest in typical years.   It can still be chilly, with the moisture in the air bone chilling cold, windy and miserable.    I remember living on the Carolina coast and UNCW would host Northern teams earlier in the year and I used to laugh thinking how bummed out they had to be on a 45 degree cloudy day with the wind blowing from the North and the humidity was 78%, real feel 37 degrees.

Quick temp comparo between MHK and Knoxville (current home of No. 1 team in the country)...

Avg. high/low in Feb: MHK (47/21) Knox (53/33)
Avg. high/low in March: MHK (57/30) Knox (61/40)
Avg. high/low in April: MHK (67/42) Knox (71/48)
Avg. high/low in May: MHK (77/54) Knox (79/57)

There are semi-legit excuses the K-State baseball coach could use for sucking (not a fully-funded sport in a low-population state, etc.), but weather isn't one of them.

Meaning the scholarship situation - 11.7 scholarships for the entire roster.

Everybody is up against that.

Yes, but not everybody plays in a low population state where three D-1 schools are competing for 20ish D1 players every year and, in all likelihood, can't/won't offer them anything other than small partial scholarships because they've got to save their biggest partials for out-of-state athletes.

Schools in large population states have a built-in advantage in the non-fully funded sports because they have loads more in-state players to choose from and they can offer those in-state players partial scholarships to stay home at in-state tuition rates. Whereas, if K-State wanted to offer a kid from Florida, that kid will have to pay out-of-state tuition and a 9/10 scholarship to K-State is probably about the same as a 1/10 scholarship to Florida/Miami/Florida State, etc.

When K-State decided to offer in-state tuition to any student from several states (Texas, Oklahoma, etc.) that certainly helped, but it's still obviously not quite the same. That gap can also be made up with academic scholarships to supplement the partial athletic scholarship, but, again, still not going to be the same.

Miss is a low population state with at least 3 D1 baseball programs.    They seem to do alright.     Texas is one of the, if not the fastest growing state in the United States, so I am not understanding the "not quite the same", again, there's only 11.7 scholarships, the Texas schools can't get everybody.    Oregon is a low population state in the Northeast, and Oregon State has a powerful  major corp funded competitor just down the road.   Stillwater Oklahoma is, well, Stillwater Oklahoma, they seem to do just fine.

I'm not saying it should be used as an excuse, but many coaches have used it as an excuse and it's certainly a better one than the weather. I do think those large population states (especially Texas, Florida and California) have an advantage - particularly for the top flight talent. But, it's certainly something that can be overcome as the list of schools you shared has proven.

Having said all of that - it would also be nice if baseball scholarships could be bumped to 20-25 to help even the playing field. But, that also means additional scholarships on the women's side, so it's probably unlikely any time soon.

The weather really isn't an excuse.   Again, unless a school is in Florida, Arizona or Southern California the months and days leading up to the season and the early part of the season are filled with chilly days and rainy weather.    This is why K-State has artificial grass in its baseball stadium.   Unless it's pouring rain or snowing, or absolutely frigid, they can practice outside.   Brandeberry is set up to support live batting practice.

K-State is a big boy athletic department fielding the minimum number of sports and still spending over $80 million dollars a year on athletics.    In-state/out-of-state shouldn't make any significant difference, and makes no difference if players are coming from reduced tuition states.

Wins are wins, but we narrowly avoided losing two games at home to an awful Northern Colorado team last night/Tuesday. If Hughes can't find some reliable bullpen help it's going to be a really, really bad Big 12 season - like us and KU duking it out for taking the last spot in the Big 12 tourney with a 5-20 type of record.
