Lent is such a joke

This, do whatever the hell you want people
i don't think anyone in this thread is saying that people shouldn't do whatever they want

Their religion is saying different
Right...and adults either choose to adhere to the principles of their chosen religion or they do not.

Condiments on your food.

Is salt a condiment!?! I don't know, that's going to be a personal choice for you. What about cheese? Well, if you put cheese on your hamburger, I'd say yes, but on a cheeseburger, that's just part of the dish.

going to church. You like going to church, right?

This has been mine for like the last 10 years.
Fifteen minutes later, when the Kansas locker room opened its doors to the media, the Jayhawks were still crying. Literally, bawling. All of them. I've never seen anything like it, and I've seen devastated college locker rooms -- after losses in the Final Four, the national championship game -- ever

Dlew12 butthurt from last year's lent thread:
Lent is dumb.  Fixed.
I think it has its merits.

Jesus fasted for forty days in the desert....giving up soda in an attempt to victoriously live through his sacrifice is a slap in the face.
I'm not pretending that my sacrifice is at all similar, but it serves as a reminder.  In fact, here we are discussing it.

Sorry bro, I see this is a soft spot for you.  This should cheer you up

 :emawkid:
If you are giving up something because it is bad for you and you would rather not do it, I think it is silly to need an outside reason to do so, have some self-control.  If you are just giving up something for the sake of giving it up in some sort of sacrificial sense, why bother?
I'm not going to let this devolve into an internet theology discussion because those are just the worst, but it is supposed to be sacrificial.  We bother because it's part of our religion and it's important to us.

Also, for what it's worth, I completely understand why people think it's stupid.

I'm just explaining what it is because I recognize that from the outside looking in, it looks really stupid and doesn't make any sense.

it doesn't look stupid to people from the outside.  it's an attractive tradition.  i do find the people that give up incredibly minor things to be farcical, but that's them, not the tradition.

Yes. This is what triggers the mockery. My bro in law is some Middle East orthodox variety and basically goes vegan for 40 days. It's kind of impressive.

No big, 8man.

I still respect your beliefs and opinions and am glad we're both mature enough to be really good friends IRL despite our differing views on religion!  go cats!
