Lent is dumb.  Fixed.
I think it has its merits.

Jesus fasted for forty days in the desert....giving up soda in an attempt to victoriously live through his sacrifice is a slap in the face.
I'm not pretending that my sacrifice is at all similar, but it serves as a reminder.  In fact, here we are discussing it.

In all seriousness, the Friday seafood menus at Hibachi Hut during lent are pretty legit.

A girl I know gave up chocolate.  However, healthy stuff with chocolate on it is negotiable.

There's a girl at work who gave up chocolate...but only "solid chocolate".

On the other end of the spectrum, my Maronite in-laws give up all animal products along with caffeine, alcohol, sex, etc. They're basically brown vegan Mormon nuns for two months (b/c for some reason their lent is longer than normal lent).

I don't know anything about this at all.

What religion is giving up meat on Fridays?  Or is it every day for 6 weeks.  Always seemed weird to me that restaurants break out or feature new non-meat menu items for a segment of people who can't eat their processed meat for 1/7 of the days over 6 weeks.

The catholics make up a pretty large chunk of the population, and most people don't really know how to cook seafood so a large percentage of them go out to eat every Friday during Lent. Couple that with the fact that Friday evening is one of the busiest times for restaurants anyway, and no catholic would go to a restaurant that didn't have some kind of seafood option, and you can see why the catholics really have the restaurant industry by the balls this time of the year.

Yeah, I get nice Friday night restaurants making sure they have a non-meat special on Fridays during this time.  I don't get McDonald's and every fast food joint marketing the crap out of their "seafood" options every day for six weeks.  Who's eating McDonald's 7 days a week and has a dilemma on Fridays?  Get a salad.  Make a grilled cheese.

Where did you get that overnight bag?

That's puzzled me as well.

You are supposed to be giving up a luxury, aren't you? Since when is ground beef a luxury? In Kansas, fish is more of a luxury than ground beef. Back in the days of Jesus and whatnot, beef was not as plentiful as it is now.

i mean, i guess you can use the term luxury but to your point, it's really not applicable anymore.

It does sort of go against the strong anti-abortion stance they have.

Yeah, that doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me, either, but I guess poor catholics have to eat, too. Just look at the parking lot and drive thru of your local Long John Silver's next Friday. There is definitely a market for Friday fast food fish during lent.

I love lent.  I don't practice, but I love the infusion of fish sandwiches everywhere.

Wasn't no meat on Fridays just a way to force people to buy from fishermen back in the old days? Weren't all of the disciples fishermen? hmmmmmmm

When I worked at DQ in high school we would have popcorn shrimp during lent.  I ate a lot of it.  Therefore, I like lent.

It's a nice theory, but it was the catholic church hundreds of years later that started lent. Jesus and the disciples played no part.
