Wouldn't it be better for the finances of NIU to not accept the Oranje Bowl bid? The university is going to lose millions of dollars due to be contractually locked into buying 17,500 tickets. UConn lost millions when they went to the Fiesta to get crushed by OU.

If NIU were to win this game, though, it would be incredible for the football program, though. NIU drew another team in FSU who really wouldn't be good enough to be in a BCS bowl if they weren't in such a shitty conference. They just might win.

I like rooting for the underdog too, but come on. Is there anyone on the NIU defense that can stay within 10 yards of FSU's fastest WR?

Aren't we the most profitable athletic department in the country? I could care less about an extra $1 mil. OU got what they deserved

Best value per win. The most profitable is, and will forever be, Bevo

NIU is probably the worst team to ever play in a BCS game. I just think that FSU is not that good and that Northern Illinois will probably do a better job preparing for the game because nobody thinks they belong. NIU might win this game.

my personal opinion:

Dumb as crap rule

would of loved to see 2 big 12 teams just because as a conference i think we deserve it

NIU does not deserve it at all

but since NIU did get in what evz eff off Oklahoma

and since crap ain't changing GO NIU beat FSU!!!!

Unless FSU announces they are joining the B12 before they play

So if OU (tied for 1st place in Big 12) loses to A&M (3rd in their DIVISION of the SEC), there is no way to ignore that the SEC is better than every other conference, right? I'm not necessarily predicting it to happen, but if it does, the Big 12 should be very embarrassed.

I'm getting more and more annoyed with the talking point that OU got screwed down to the Cotton Bowl.  Why weren't these bitches writing the same volume of pieces last year? /we all know why, but still

The point, much like the point against the mid major teams, is that it’s not one game.  It’s how you play, week in and week out, against good competition.  For example, KSU played 6 straight games to finish out the season against teams w/ >.500 record.  A&M only had two "stretches" in the season where they had to play 2 teams w/ >.500 back to back.  The results of bowl games are, imo, meaningless unless they fit the narrative that a pundit has.

Really disappointed in those who like the idea of OU getting screwed.  Nevermind TSC, we need Big 12 teams playing at the highest level.

And the reason media didn't cry over us not getting in last year was because Michigan replaced us....not NIU.

Also, OU's match-up in a BCS bowl would have probably been easier to win compared to what they have now.

FYI, in 2014 NIU would get an automatic bid to one of the top 6 access bowls and would playing either LSU or Texas A&M in the Cotton, Fiesta, or Chick-fil-A.  They would also still get that big, access bowl payout as well.

The only reason they wouldn't be "getting in over OU, LSU, A&M, and Clemson" is because there are 2 more spots and Louisville wouldn't get in.

Lets not forget that Ucconn also lost money going to a BCS bowl due to the mandatory ticket buy that these bowl games have. This looks to happen to NIU as well.

NIU is given an opportunity to play Florida State University in the rough ridin' Orange Bowl. No amount of lost money is going to make turning down that opportunity a good decision. JFC, people.

Speaking of the BCS -

How mumped up is this season? Utah State, San Jose State, Northwestern, Northern Illinois, and Kent State are in the top 25.

Shows how weak this system is.  Put Kent state up against some of the 7-5 teams in the B12 and they'd get slaughtered.  LOL

No, because they are both the best teams in their leagues. You could argue that A&M finished 6th in their league, and is playing a team that has a Big 12 trophy. If a middle of the road team in the SEC beats one of the best in the Big 12, that's not good.

Besides the fact they help determine pre season rankings which in turn affect BCS rankings

That is laughable.  Bad things happen to OU all the time, and usually it happens when the entire nation is watching.

The Sooners promptly lost 2 games in a row against ranked teams after Mike's departure that season (a shocking 35–7 loss against #13 Kansas State in the Big 12 Title Game, and a tough 21–14 loss to #3 LSU in the BCS National Title Game). Since that time (2004–present), Stoops' teams have gone 17–13 vs. ranked opponents, and 3–4 in Bowl Games with no National Titles (although they played for 3 more)
