This is such a piece of crap.
i doubt it's a piece of crap, apple makes quality products.  definitely not for everyone though.

Ok, it won't break or anything, but it's a piece of crap product. Face it. Watch the video on apple.com. It's a complete joke. Lots of European looking guys in tight t shirts stroking it over their iphone XL saying how revolutionary and amazing it is without saying exactly how it is revolutionary and or amazing. For that much money, just buy a machine that can actually do every thing an $800 machine should be able to do. Whatever butt mumped Fake Sugar Dick (WARNING, NOT THE REAL SUGAR DICK!) pays $800 and has to be told which applications he or she can or can't run is a rough ridin' moron and shouldn't be allowed to vote, drive, or copulate.

And it would be rough ridin' amazing if you could just tether your awesome iphone to this via USB to share internet. Too bad it can't tether to share internet and you'd have to get a dongle for a USB port- only the most common one in the world- but instead the Fake Sugar Dick (WARNING, NOT THE REAL SUGAR DICK!) sheep line up and take it for $30 more a month.

the price points begin at $499 not $800.
when i go out to newegg.com and search their netbooks (which is what this thing essentially is), they range in price from $279 - $600.  like i said earlier, this fits a niche market, obviously not meant for a computer geek like myself unless I had money to burn, or you, but for some people, it works.   don't be so damn shortsighted.  the tablet market is just begining to take root, I'm sure you read engadget everyday so you  know what i'm talking about.  every major computer manufacturer is some stage of development of one.

i really don't get the pc-guy backlash towards apple.  i get the apple-guy backlash towards apple, they're the ones that got screwed by apple's growth, if anything pc-guy should be happy that microsoft cant schell crap products anymore and at least have some competition.

I was just being Fake Sugar Dick (WARNING, NOT THE REAL SUGAR DICK!) earlier, but what I said rings true. And Apple brings all the backlash they get on themselves, well, alot of the time. How can you release a product as lame as this with absolutely no new features and start off the keynote with this:
Quote
Good morning and thank you all for coming today. We want to kick off 2010 by introducing a truly magical and revolutionary product today.

Not to mention, release a video of guys salivating over this calling it the best thing since sliced bread but conveniently leave out why.

And a $400 netbook can do a hell of a lot more functionally than this. That's what is incredibly stupid. The fact that they are still continuing to line people up like sheep for their application store bothers the hell out of me. Is it convenient? Sure. But I don't need a middle man selling me stuff and I don't want them telling me how to use the piece of hardware I just shelled out cash for. These are 2 very disturbing trends that are growing over into more areas. It's not good for the consumer at all. These have very little to do with which company it is.

sorry, i thought you went Hemmy on us.  and you're right, this thing is nothing more than a big ipod touch.

I get what you're saying about the App store, but in some ways it's good too because it doesn't allow people who don't know what they're doing to install crap software on their machines which in turn ends up screwing them up.  people buying this thing probably need that help.

No multi-tasking is a real drawback with this thing.  If it wants to compete against netbooks, it seems like you ought to be able to run a media player/email/twitter/etc clients all at the same time.  This can't be a computer replacement the way a netbook can be for a certain set of users, it's a companion device.

Small storage reduces it's viability as a general purpose media player, I mean 16GB? :runaway:  'clams is right, e-ink makes for a much better ebook reading experience.

I can see the appeal for couch surfing I guess, but that's a pretty niche market.  If this thing sells a ton, it's another testament to Apple's marketing ability.

Also, it's not the fact that it's a tablet formfactor. There is competition, but they're going about it completely differently. Look at the Archos 7 Android. The form factor actually looks usable, great price, and features that people expect. Plus expandable memory which blows the Apple pricing model out of the water. It's not revolutionary by any means, but they're not claiming it to be. It's just another solid entry into the tablet/PMP market. Even the Microsoft Courier brings something new in terms of formfactor, despite not much being known about it.

That's why you have an application store, but you don't force it on people. Allow people to do whatever they want. Most people would still gravitate to the store.

I will probably get one.  I like to bbs and surf while watching games.  Don't have a laptop so I use my iphone.  Iphone is great, but a bigger one will be  :runaway:

Definitely not a necessary purchase, but I will feel pretty elite posting during games.

think about being able to sit on the couch or whatever and surf goEMAW.com without the weight/hassle of your  laptop.  or sit on a plane and watch movies/television shows, etc.  the battery life blows any laptop out of the water.   i like that some have 3G too, that would be pretty cool.  throw it in your briefcase and roll.

not trying to defend the thing outright, just seems kinda neat.

yes!

there are some decent reasons for this, but i don't think it amounts to much when you consider the benefit of having the capabilities.

apple is trying to force the web to become more secure. the technology exists, but still hasn't "caught up" so to speak.

I don't buy that this is for security.  They just don't want to use somebody else's proprietary code in their OS.  Which is a little ironic, but what the hell.

Bottom line though, from a user point of view, no Flash means, no to a bunch of Facebook games, no Hulu, no statsheet.com charts.

The reality is that this product isn't going to make laptops/macbooks obsolete.  It's just a nice, simple product that is convenient to use while traveling/take a dump.

I just wish my pants had bigger pockets to carry it in.

Made by apple, but mostly it is a small, thin, giant touchscreen with ridiculous battery life.
