Yes, it does indeed "take a village" to raise a child. Most communities (grass-root communities) invest in the development of children. However, the USA has very few grass-root communities and parental investment is obviously crucial in that development. Sibling investment works in a similar manner (which research by Evolutionary Psychologists shows shared DNA/environment being critical). Let's say Self's daugher is 17. when Self's daughter is 34, the child will be 17. It's kind of hard to connect to a child that doesn't share a ton of DNA and an unequal environment. I'm not even incorporating feelings/emotion into this. With time, a relationship can develop but it isn't instantaneous. It doesn't make you an awful person, just a person pulled in many directions where necessity to attach is not present.
