Seems like May issued some standard condescension but no actual overt allegations of racism.

Yeah his point was we weren't good/important enough to fire a coach who went to a bowl, beat UT twice, and at the time of firing had the chance to make 2 bowls in 3 seasons. Same KSU sucks and should be happy with breathing bullshit.
However, racist crackers took May's words a completely different direction even though he said what every other national media guy including Holtz said.
This wasn't the statement that people say May called us racist in. This statement was right after Ron got fired. The thing people say May called us racist was during the bowls. 08 was the height of the "there aren't enough black HCs" discussion. May made some comment that even when black coaches do get jobs, they aren't given the same leeway. He used Prince as an example. Did he call us racist, no. Did he he bring up the Prince firing when talking about the lack of black HCs, yes. Did he say "if RP was white, he'd still have his job", no.
May was saying, "if you aren't like those above you and the boosters, then they are more likely to turn on you." We had just fired RP. Of course it was going to come up. If you fire a black HC at the height of that discussion, it's going to be part of the discussion. He was talking about the larger issue, and we were part of the discussion, as we should have been. It was a timing issue with the larger issue. He never called us racist.
