It's not just walking fast, but walking fast while maintaining a high level of concentration to ensure never having both feet off the ground at the same time. It would also require strength in completely different muscle groups than running.

I would imagine they speed walk to train. Speed walkers average more than 8.5 miles/hour in a typical 50 km race. That's faster than I run when I go out to get exercise.

Yeah, that always gets me with distance runners.  Looks slow but is incredibly fast.
