What's the best place that's not a chain, that you can smell the large smoker outside from a couple of blocks away?

I couldn't give you the answer, but that's the criteria I always used growing up driving around.  The best spots were where it was questionable if it was a public establishment or someone's get-together.

LC's you can see the woodpile behind the place and the smoker doors are right behind the counter that you order/pay at. It's also close to Truman Sports Complex.

Hayward’s is pretty good. They just moved locations.

Julius' Rib Cage on south Seneca is my all time favorite and I miss it so much, massive smoker that's seemingly always going. Honorable mention to B&C which is downtown, and Pig In Pig Out which is on I-135 and 13th. I really don't like PIPO but when I lived there it probably was the consensus best by Wichitans. I've heard good things about Delano Barbecue Company and The Angry Elephant but I'm not sure either existed when I lived there.

It’s hard not to see the restaurant’s closing as a referendum on the food culture in KC right now. This city is inundated with investor-backed clones of the same “concept” that serves understirred Manhattans and $14 short-rib mac and cheese. It’s named something meaningless but alliterative, like “Birch + Barrel.” You hear it has a really good brunch.

i promise you guys i am not the author of this

Their location sucked and atmosphere wasn't good enough to draw people in to food they are unfamiliar with. I actually enjoyed it as a change of pace but that area is not the location to try that concept.

They were dropping off flyers in Aggieville a few weeks ago. Said they are looking to come to the MHK market soon.

Ex gf and I went to Bristol last night.  It was just okay, certainly not worth the price.

Yeah they have biscuits that look similar to what you might get at Red Lobster except they were not good at all IMO.  I could barely finish one of them.  It was very dry and had a weird sweet taste to it.
