BTW, I highly recommend following US Embassy Cairo on twitter right now and reading through its timeline, specifically the Arabs who are responding. Good insight into some of the guiding fictions that shape their worldviews.

They have a delicate grip on power. They saw an opportunity to co-opt a popular cause. Then they saw that crap had gotten out of hand and they tried to save face. The Ultras are running this show. Both the MB and the salafists have sent leaders out to try and calm things down. So has the local cleric most closely associated with the revolution. The ultras stole their bullhorns (and cellphones lol wtf) and kicked them the eff out.

An estimated 350 ultras have attacked a police force of about 200 at the US consulate in Alexandria. Are demanding that they be allowed to nail an Egyptian and Muslim flag to the consulate wall. Police have refused.

Maybe already on the news. Don't know.

In Cairo, the ultras at the embassy have been pushed back to the cornishe (along the river a few blocks away). Lots of rock throwing and tear gas, no real gunfire as of a couple hours ago.
