I have lived in some dirty cities in some third worldy countries, but Cairo is definitely the dirtiest and third-worldiest of them all.

Also, the traffic. It's rough ridin' hilarious.

Me to cabbie: Does the government or anything ever come out to repaint the lanes?
Cabbie (as he's weaving backwards through traffic at a roundabout): What? Those lines? The British left those here.

traffic in cairo is rough ridin' brutal, an american trying to drive in it would make it worse.

it's almost like i told you this months ago.  dumbass.  remind me to put this dumbass on ignore from now on

I love this thread.  It really should be a book, or a blog or something, but it is a great thread.

felix you need to make up a shot to do with the locals at your local bar and call it the King Tut

it should  be something really nasty and strong so that whenever you see your locals hanging around town, or whenever you walk into a bar, all the locals will know you as the King Tut guy.  they will hate doing them b/c grossness but they will end up befriending you b/c you're the king tut guy and you get them all drunk, etc

No. I'll post some pics of the building later. It's mostly upper middle class egyptians. I walked through Tahrir this evening for dinner/drinks and places like the Cafe Riche and Groppis coffee shops were crawling with European expats. There was a great place called the Orientalist that was just a narrow, twisting two-story shop crammed with old books and original maps and Napoleon-era lithographs of Cairo and the surrounding larger region. Was pretty great.

Also, my lazy cabbie refused to drop me off at the usual spot near the embassy because of traffic. But he assured me "it was just on the other side of that building" so I just hopped out and started walking and found myself in the middle of what looked like an occupy wall st camp but was actually tahrir square. I quickly oriented myself by spotting the enormous banner calling for the release of the blind sheik, since I knew if I walked past it and took a left I'd be at the north gate to the embassy. Was a pretty low-key way of accidentally experiencing the square for the first time (0 slap fights btw).

This is an excellent idea and I am open to suggestions on concoction and name.

I am really enjoying this thread as well. I think my favorite bit so far has been the Final Destination reference and the picture of the trampoline on a rooftop.

Please keep these updates coming.

i think that whenever you do a king tut shot, you have to do three king tut shots but before you take them you do the walk like an egyptian dance thing and then very loudly state "king...tut, tut, tut". then take the shots, shots, shots. thoughts on all of that?

actually i forgot to post about doing the walk like an egyptian part, but yes, 100%.  disagree about having to do 3 in each King Tut session.

Haven't seen many that do drink. But judging by the restaurants and the litter on the streets, this seems to be a popular choice:

I'm trying to put together a quick collection of "revolution art" around the square (graffiti). It's pretty amazing but picture taking there is really, really tricky. Also, one of the martyrs frequently depicted looks like Tony Danza.

I'd never had it before. It's pretty good. 4.0 but they serve it in pounders. I still haven't seen a bar that serves hard liquor yet, but I'm in a pretty conservative area. I'm sure there's one in Tahrir or something.

Ooh, and sports update: I found a bball court yesterday!  :excited: Gonna check it out later this evening when it cools down and see if anyone's there.
