On the Lebanese:

Oh man. I just forwarded this link to the entire crew. They're gonna be so excited. Someone's gonna have to translate it for Baba!  :excited:

He says his father, Georges Atallah, is pretty much a walking, talking Rolodex of Lebanese who’s-who. Not only does the senior Atallah know each and every person with even a hint of Lebanese ancestry, but he also tries to claim just about any successful person as kin.

This is cliche because of Greek Wedding, but it's still hilarious when you see it in real life. I'M PRETTY SURE STEVE JOBS IS AT LEAST HALF LEBANESE! PREEEEEEEEEEETTY SURE, HABIBI!

FR, If you we're going to write a thesis on Islam and the US, in the present, what would it be and what sources would you use that could potentially incorporate goEMAW into your citations?

So what is going on with the ease off on the MB, as reported by western media?

I honestly don't know anything about this unless it has to do with foreign policy. But I would use the political Facebook thread as a source.

They need a return to stability and they've already disrupted the MB's power structure and sufficiently undermined their popular legitimacy. Pushing it further would cause violence unnecessary to their goals.

Before they start sending expendable folks like me back, they want to gauge reception to the new ambassador and (more importantly) need some idea of what the government is gonna do with issues like the constitutional referendum, elections and the whole Morsi, Mubarak et al mess.

Did you see the parking story in fanning's "towed" thread? If so, I'll try to think of another.

The Egyptian media sounds like a real treat

Here's a pretty good read from the NYT on some of the hilarious media stuff going on right now:

Quote
Citing anonymous “security sources” the article from [state-owned newspaper Al Ahram] purported to reveal the details of an agreement to “divide Egypt” allegedly struck between Khairat el-Shater, the leader of the Muslim Brotherhood, and U.S. Ambassador Anne Patterson, which involved helping 300 armed fighters enter the country from Gaza

Quote
[Private outlets] are cheerleading the country’s so-called war on terrorism — really, a campaign to destroy the Muslim Brotherhood — with a vehemence that has the blogger and columnist Mahmoud Salem describing them as “post-9/11 U.S. news channels on steroids and ketamine.”

Quote
one American channel has suddenly become popular here. TV satellite channels have been showing subtitled segments from Fox News ... Thanks to this strange connection between anti-Islamist circles in Egypt and right-wing groups in United States, the idea that Obama is a staunch supporter of the Islamists has become widespread.

Quote
Tahani el-Gabali, a former Supreme Court judge who has clashed with Islamists, told a local TV program last week that Obama’s Kenyan half-brother is a financier of the Muslim Brotherhood, an allegation that appears to have originated on U.S. right-wing Web sites.

On the other side of the fence, we have this:

Quote
'Sinai jihadis want to overthrow Egypt, then they'll come for Israel'

In an exclusive interview with Israel Hayom, GOC Southern Command Maj. Gen. Sami Turgeman says Israel is preparing for every scenario in Gaza and Egypt • He warns that the turmoil in Sinai may create a new security reality along the southern borders.

Is that whole Egypt thing still going on? In exactly 31 hours, there will not be a single Rex in Egypt, so things could get pretty dicey for them pretty fast (seeing as how we really locked crap down the year that we were there...)

No. We'll probably go back in January. Still a few years left on the tour.

Yep, really couldn't work out better for me.  Get to rexPAK in the upcoming months, and I'll still have a safe house in egypt as I need it in the upcoming years.
