i don't want to read 60 pages to find out but I've heard it's hot in cairo

can anyone confirm this

I've mentioned this anecdote multiple times, but egyptian buildings don't have AC in the bathroom (side note: I really need to post some pics of egyptian engineering in action for the gurus on this board to enjoy). Anyway, it hit a dry 113 the other day and completely bricked an entire package of wet wipes.

That said, DC is worse. The humidity. OMG. I'm embarrassed every time I walk down the block for some coffee and look like I've been jumping rope in the attic.

I mean what do you have to do in a situation like that, pee on the wet wipes before you use them, that kind of defeats the purpose

Today, office hottie dressed her pocket-sized dog (white curly hair, toy poodle maybe?) as one of those stuffed ikhwan sheep, complete with a collar with the red "leave" sign as a tag. Adorable.

OMG, I'd rather see pics of this more than the hottie. (by about a billion miles)

I would watch this sitcom.  Since we're not going to get pictures, at least let us know who would be cast as hottie
With the tiny little dog and dog purse, I am picturing Legally Blonde Reese Witherspoon.

I'm going more Amanda Peet.

Felix Rex, first off, congrats on the impending bundle of joy. I have a question for you. My granddaughter is supposed to fly to Cairo on Aug. 3rd and begin a M.A. program at the American Univ. in Cairo located in New Cairo. Her super cautious contact through the state dept. is encouraging her to delay enrollment for a year since society is on the brink of chaos and collapse. But her Egyptian boyfriend says everything is just fine, no worries whatsoever. We figure reality is somewhere in the middle. Anyway, would you be comfortable with seeing a 22-year-old off to college over there? Just curious to hear your thoughts. Thanks.

Where's she living? I'm assuming the Garden City or Zamalek area? What sort of building? What sort of support infrastructure? Does she have any contacts beside the boyfriend? Any sort of network to keep her in the loop, make sure she knows peaceful neighborhoods and routes to buy basic goods, etc? Does she have to take a cab to get to campus or is there a shuttle? Has she had foreign travel experience before?

Unless they extend the evac, DoS personnel and family members are due to return on pretty much that same date (for similar reasons; schools start and not only is it a nightmare logistically to find spots for evac kids stateside but State prepays tuition to the private school). I can keep you posted on state's plans to return people as I hear things.

Presently, there's no real targeting of American civilians. In fact, the Egyptians I knew (from both sides of the current split) were quite protective of us. But there's a lot of factors to consider before I would just say outright yes or no.

thanks FR. I'm a little out of the loop on all her particulars, but I'm going to share those questions/points with her folks. She fell in love with this Egyptian kid when she was on a class tour there last summer. He seems to be her main contact, other than the university people. If you would pass along any relevant info to her situation as it becomes available, I would very much appreciate it.

Yup.  Sister of a girl I used to date fell in love with/married a Muslim dude from Cyprus.  She moved there and decided she didn't like it/him and tried to leave and he forcefully kept her from leaving, but she eventually got out.  They're divorced now and she's only 24ish.  But she's a real-estate agent so if you guys are looking to buy or sell let me know and I'll make sure you don't use her because wow she's a rough ridin' airhead.

Oh dear god. JFC. I waited until after Mrs. Kalmar had her morning coffee, then talked to her about the stuff Felix Rex said. She revealed to me that the young couple is actually ENGAGED and planning to get married over there in December, although this was supposed to remain a secret for awhile longer. They were together all of 2 weeks last summer. He's from a traditional muslim family. She is a typical spoiled American, used to all her freedoms. My wife expressed her concerns to them, but was told they already know each other "super well" because they've been ... wait for it ... skyping.

Felix, is there any chance I could hire your wife to rough up this kid and knock him outta the picture? She could take along the lady with the vicious toy poodle attack dog for support (maybe leave the pink purse at home). OMG. this is a nightmare.

Lets be frank. This is an episode. I'll have my people call BSAC to negotiate the rights.

But in all seriousness, DeVere, this sounds like a terrible idea. But to clarify, I would also say that if the boyfriend was an American on a different coast or something. Islam has nothing to do with it. I mean, they've been cybering for a year now, so how fundamentalist can he be, right.

In retrospect, I may have overstepped my bounds just now. Mods, consider redacting?

I think the fact that she seems to make poor life decisions may be the real cause for concern rather than a potential civil war.

Tell her FR's wet wipe story.  That should do it.
