If there was a gif of nicname thwarting the attempted-flag-taker and then gesturing him to suck it, followed by motioning for all of Hilton Shelter to boo him louder, it'd be better than that auburn gif.

Seems like a few jackass students versus a disgusting set of Jim Crow laws.  Kind of scary that Phog was such a racist.

Yes the difference is that our racists are nameless, faceless cowards.  At Kansas and Missouri they get buildings named after them, they are forever honored and revered.  I guess that Beware of the Phog means beware of the phog chapter of the KU Klux Klan whipping you for using the wrong bathroom.

You guys seriously didn't know what "Beware of the Phog" meant?  "Pay heed all who enter?"  It's all about racism.

In all fairness, I was raised a Kentucky fan. Rupp Arena. Maybe it's a pre-req to being a blue blood?

Nah man, Rupp brought his KU instilled racism to UK.  Phog taught him well.

My guess is Dean Smith got out of Lawrence as quick as possible and tried to never look back.  Then he sent Roy back to clean up the place because he felt bad years later.

Up until about 1969, it actually read, "Beware of the White Phog" and "Pay heed all who enter (No Coloreds allowed)".  Things really haven't changed much.

K-State fans threw bananas at a black KU athlete because of the way he looked.

/thread

So you readily admit that this is only a problem because the athlete in question was black?

Do you find it a bit odd that you would not have a problem with this if it happened to a white athlete who looked similar?

The only reason you're defending the racist behavior is because it happened at K-State.  That's just sad.

I don't excuse those students at all.  It is disgusting, and I hate it.  Just glad we didn't name any buildings after that disgusting brand of racism.  Would forever taint it as a monument to Jim Crow.

Sorry to drag this back up, but I felt the OP kinda missed some of the key, and truly disgusting, quotes from the story:

Quote
Still the situation escalated. While walking across campus one day, John spotted a hand-lettered sign: “Do not swim with the n****r.” John pulled that one down and collected several more that he found in the area and took them directly to Dr. Naismith.

Quote
McLendon met with the other sixty-odd black students at KU and explained his plan: Stay away from the pool for two more weeks, and we can have it forever. When the two weeks passed quietly, Allen called McLendon a “smart-aleck” but lived up to his promise. The pool was open to all students from that day forward.

It's embarrassing to this state that KU is allowed to honor the memory of such an obvious racist by not changing the name of their arena. If anything, it should be named for Naismith, who was evidently the only higher-up at KU at that time who wasn't racist.

Of course, that piss-smelling, rat-infested old shack is a somewhat fitting tribute for a disgusting racist like Phog Allen.

In KU's defense I think they were going to rename Phog Allen after one of their big donors but changed course when they had a hard time finding one not under investigation by the FBI/SEC/etc.

Edit: Although I guess they could rename it after that one guy who used to be a K-State fan but switched teams?
