KU's racists in the news
« on: February 13, 2012, 02:26:54 PM »
Black athletes were playing for Clair Bee at Long Island University by 1933, but KU didn’t put a black player on the court until LaVannes Squires joined the team in 1952. McLendon admitted to Katz that skin color wasn’t the only obstacle standing between him and a spot on the Jayhawks—though quick and cerebral, McLendon had been cut from his high school basketball team three times. He was a former lifeguard and an excellent swimmer, though, and he expected to ace the mandatory swimming test required for his degree. But when McLendon showed up at the on-campus pool to work out, he found it half empty. He was told it was drained every Wednesday.

McLendon came back on Thursday, and found the pool empty again. Nobody had told him the pool was segregated, perhaps because no colored student had tried to swim there before. The school’s passive-aggressive trick exposed a weakness he could exploit—a fear of direct confrontation.

McLendon was allowed to meet with athletic director (and head basketball coach) Forrest “Phog” Allen to negotiate for the rights of black students who wanted to swim in the pool. Civil disobedience had brought his crusade to the attention of KU’s most powerful men, and McLendon resolved to close the deal peacefully. When Allen stated—perhaps a bit disingenuously—that he hesitated to integrate the pool out of concern for McLendon’s safety, the younger man had a ready answer: Open the pool to mixed swimming for two weeks, and if nothing untoward occurred during that time, the pool would be open to all.

So Mizzou's football stadium and KU's basketball arena are named after documented racists.  Fitting.

It's amazing we were able to win the civil war having to fight racists on both sides of the state lines.

This is as tragic as it is unsurprising.

"When things got testy, professor Naismith detailed a pair of intimidating football players to guard the Robinson pool during John’s aquatic training."

I don't think any KU football player has ever been intimidating...

Nope.  Multiple K-State fans took part in it, and that was in the 1970's, not the '50's.

it's a well known fact that the player was allergic to bananas, which is why they threw them.

A few fans doing something stupid is a lot different than the Fuhrer of the University participating in racism.

It wasn't their fault that Von Moore looked like Diddy Kong.  It wasn't like KSU fans were pelting all the other black players with bananas.  I don't think he deserved it, but I don't think it was racist.  Segregating university pools is pretty racist though.
If there was a gif of nicname thwarting the attempted-flag-taker and then gesturing him to suck it, followed by motioning for all of Hilton Shelter to boo him louder, it'd be better than that auburn gif.

As far as the bananas?

Owens remembers them being hurled as missiles in just one Sunflower Showdown in his 19 seasons — KU’s 75-63 victory on Feb. 11, 1978, in KSU’s Ahearn Fieldhouse.

“I had gotten a call the week of the game warning me that the stores in Manhattan had sold out of bananas,” Owens said.

Fruit-loving KSU fans apparently were miffed that a handful of hot dogs were tossed at Wildcat forward Curtis Redding in the Jayhawks’ 56-52 victory on Jan. 21 in Allen Fieldhouse.

“I instructed our guys to go shake hands with coach Hartman as they were introduced. I figured no way they’d throw anything at coach Hartman. I think Jack thought, ‘What a nice gesture.’’’

The fans ended up hurling the bananas in the second half.

“There had to be a 20- to 30-minute delay while they cleaned the floor. The TV network was upset about that — think of all that air-time wasted. Coach (John) Wooden was doing color at the game and wasn’t too pleased (at the lack of sportsmanship),” Owens said.

A KSU fan wore a gorilla costume to the game and stalked the KU bench.

“It ticked us off,” former KU power forward Donnie Von Moore said in a 2007 interview with the Journal-World, “because at first we thought it had some racial connotations. They were basically calling us gorillas. Later they said we threw hot dogs so they threw bananas. It’s just food. We beat them, so that’s what mattered.”

Seems like a few jackass students versus a disgusting set of Jim Crow laws.  Kind of scary that Phog was such a racist.
