People who volunteer way too much personal information
« on: December 30, 2011, 12:58:43 PM »
If I ask you how you're doing today, I don't want to hear anything other than good/great/really well, etc.  If you divulge something about someone in your family being sick or dead, I almost instantly stop listening to you for an indeterminate amount of time.

This just happened to me today at work.  I call up a lady at another office who i talk to maybe once a month.

Me:  How's it going?  How was Christmas?
Her:  I'm glad it's over.
Me:  Why?
Her:  Christmas is just a hard time for my family.
Me:  (pause) Um, sounds good.  Say, the reason i called...

Probably my fault for asking how her Christmas was.

Me:  So, do you have any siblings?
Her:  No, I'm adopted.
Me:  Really?  Do you have any adopted siblings then?
Her:  I used to, until my sister was murdered.
Me:  eff.

All they're doing is answering your questions. How about not asking how they are? You sound like the dumbass, here.

Your mistake was asking "why".

this, I always just say Hi, Hello, good morning etc.    ask yes/no questions "did you have a nice holiday?"  or "hope you had a nice break"

Yeah, there hasn't been a single example of anyone "volunteering" too much info here.

i go with a simple, "hello" then a head nod.  keep walking.  if you even appear to slow down, they'll stop and talk to you.  DO.  NOT.  WANT.

Jesus, what's she supposed to say? And why would you not want to know the details here? seems like a great story.

She is probably on another message board bitching about the annoying coworker who nags her about her siblings when she just wants to get to work.

Really weird old annoying uncle (by marraige to my fat old nasty aunt) had bladder cancer. Saw him at a family deal. He was standing next to me.  He had been in the hospital about three months before this.

I said...Hello Tom.  You are looking good. How are you feeling?

His answer... "I'll never have an erection again, and I'll never have an orgasm again."  :sdeek:

Used to work with a guy that talked all the time weather you asked him a question or not.  I would just walk away from him and go about my bussiness, but he would just keep talking as I walked away.  Sometimes I would glance over my shoulder and he would still be talking even though I was about 20 yards away.   One day I ask him "how much do you know about my personal life?"  He said "not much."  I said "that's how much I want to know about yours."
