Let's talk garment steamers
« on: December 21, 2011, 08:14:43 AM »
I can't iron.  I don't have the patience to do it decently.  I get everything dry cleaned instead.  Unfortunately, I can't find a dry cleaner to do shirts without busting off shirt buttons in the process, particularly the tiny sleeve buttons.

I want to get a steamer where I can hang a shirt up and hold something around the shirt and it makes it look dry cleaned or perfectly ironed.

Price won't be a factor if it can save me from having to take shirts to the dry cleaner and then taking them to a sewing place to get buttons replaced ever again.

Thoughts?

That's my current system.  The garment steamer is what I'm trying to implement instead.

The non-asian dry cleaner replaced the blue button - the main one right on the chest - with a white one, and it took a month or two for them to make it right.  That's when Ii moved to the asians.  There's a severe communications gap when it comes to me getting them to fix the button-smashing.

I have this:

http://www.jiffysteamer.com/Products/modelDetails.asp?productId=9&steamerCatId=2&basemodelId=2

It works really well.  However when your collar starts to curl up or the button seems start to curl, you will have to resort to the iron.

EDIT:  Like SF said, do not go cheap.  This guy is pretty expensive but I got it as a wedding gift.  I use it at least 3 days a week.

Steamers are very useful but I don't feel like there is any replacement for a nicely starched and pressed shirt.  Also, that wrinkle release spray stuff is pretty useful.

It was actually the neighbors thread that reminded me to solicit advice.  I'd gotten by for quite a while with neighbor girls doing the ironing, but I need independence at this point in my shirt unwrinkling endeavors.

Yeah, and they're pressing the buttons on the shirts into oblivion.

The best one at the local BB&B has poor reviews for dress shirts.  I see I could get that jiffy shipped from costco.  :dunno:
