He will graduate in May and will be immediately eligible.Thorne told SNY.tv that Kentucky had offered him and he had planned to visit both Kentucky and Kansas. Now neither is necessary.Thorne previously told SNY.tv he was considering Arizona, South Carolina, Virginia Tech, Illinois, Pittsburgh and “possibly N.C. State.”
Kansas has missed out on another frontcourt recruiting target.Charlotte center Mike Thorne Jr., a graduate transfer who will be eligible right away, reportedly is headed to Illinois, spurning interest from Kansas, Kentucky and Pitt, among others.Thorne, who is listed at 6 feet 11, committed to Illinois this weekend. He averaged 10.1 points and 7.3 rebounds as a junior at Charlotte. He profiles as a big body who could provide immediate help (and experience) in the paint.Kansas coach Bill Self made two trips to North Carolina this spring to meet with Thorne and his family. And Thorne reportedly was set to visit KU next week. Now that visit won’t happen.
Welp.Quote2015 St. Frances (MD) forward Eric Cobb has decommitted from K-State. He pledged well over a year ago, and is now back on the market.
The Mike Thorne Transfer Tour hits its second stop today in Champaign for an official visit to Illinois. Illinois is one of the four schools Thorne is considering for his final season of college basketball, along with Kentucky, Kansas and Pittsburgh. The former Charlotte 49er big man checked out Pittsburgh last weekend. He will travel to Kansas for a couple days next week, then wrap things up in Lexington on his fourth and final official visit next weekend. A decision will come soon after that. With Stephen Zimmerman’s commitment to UNLV last night, Thorne is the last hope to add another body to Kentucky’s frontcourt next season. The Cats could use some more muscle to join Skal Labissiere, Marcus Lee and Alex Poythress inside, so he’s kind of a big deal.
