At least people have heard of Turner Gill. Most of these other candidates appear to be have chosen (at random) from the phone book.

Those last couple of names would be much, much worse than Gill. They have to be a joke.

They probably are a joke, but think about this:

1) KU fired a coach two years after he won an Orange Bowl
2) KU fired the next coach two years into the job
3) KU is hiring a coach in a season with an unusually high number of really good job openings

That job is pretty toxic right now. They might get a decent guy, though. However, most coaches that would normally be interested would probably prefer some other guy do the heavy lifting to fix the mess before they really considered taking the job.

Urban Meyer was a MAC coach. Nick Saban was a MAC coach. Plenty of really good coaches have come from the MAC.

Yes, Doeren should be your last resort. He's had more success in the MAC than Gill, but he also has the head to head loss this season. Honestly, Fran would be a safe bet to get KU to consistent 5 or 6 win seasons. It would be much easier to find a quality coach once KU gets to that level. Either coach would make for a decent last resort. It just depends on whether KU wants to go the huge risk/big reward route or the lower risk/super low ceiling route.

Doeren was defensive coordinator at Wisconsin and recruited a lot of the talent that won KU an Orange Bowl. JohnTuckKSUFans.com.
