Frank Martin says Jamar Samuels has gone from 201 pounds to 233 this offseason. "He actually looks like a Division I athlete out there now."

Had to double check he really said 233 pounds. That's a huge transformation. Frank Martin says Samuels is playing a lot stronger now

I swear, we've heard about Jamar's "big gains" every off season since he got here.  Yet, he's still skinny and plays like a pussy down low.  I'll be impressed when I see him actually banging in the post.

I predict a 3% decrease in the "double pump, please don't block my $hit" situation this year.

Oh, you were serious.  You think Jamar doesn't play like a complete pussy down low.

I hope his new 233lb frame proves me wrong.

I think Jamar plays as strong in the paint as anyone K-State has ever had at times, and I think he takes off into Jamarland at other times.  I think what Frank is looking for out of Jamar this season is consistency in his work and leadership.

I think the 201 pounds is more shocking than the 233 pounds.  Rule of thumb being 5 pounds per inch of height he would have been the equivalent of a 165 lb 6'0 guy.

I actually think that Jamar plays pretty tough down low.  He fights for position down low on the offensive end probably better than any of our bigs.  He just doesn't go up strong all the time, which like Dax said can be pretty frustrating.

The problem is that he is 6'7, at best.  Probably closer to 6'5.  Skinny as a rail.

Yes, at times, he plays extremely tough.  But, the vast majority of the time, the dude is in Jamarland.  Frank wants hard work and leadership, but to this point, hasn't gotten it.  Jamar commits far more stupid fouls than any other K-State player I've ever seen.

He plays in the paint, but I wouldn't say he's strong.  The guy averages about 8ppg, .5 blocks, 5 rebounds.  And, on top of that, he averages 4 fouls a game and shoots 65% from the stripe.  He's a Senior Power Forward.  Those numbers are abysmal.

He needs to be focused and better at basketball.

Oh, btw, he averaged about 22minutes per game last year.  Because he's always in foul trouble.  And, Frank hated him all of last year.

But, when he's in the game not scoring or blocking shots or rebounding, I'm glad to know that he's fighting for position.

He's good at basketball otherwise he wouldn't average 8ppg, .5 blocks, 5 rebounds; numbers where aren't abysmal by any stretch.
Jamar is an offensive option, he will never be the go-to guy.  And I don't agree that he's skinny, he's lean- but he's strong as eff and knows how to use his body in the paint.

You're right on the focus part.  This has always has been problem with him.

Wrong.  He may not be big enough or skilled enough to be what you want him to be but he plays very tough down low.  He's as JYC as anyone we have.

Wrong.  He may not be big enough or skilled enough to be what you want him to be but he plays very tough down low.  He's as JYC as anyone we have.

Jamar is not physically or mentally equipped to be an impact player for this team.  That's a fact.  He may have improved over the summer.  I hope he has.  We need him.  But, to date, Jamar has been mentally and physically dissapointing.

Per Frank Martin -

“He’s got to become better as a player. He’s flattened out,” Martin said. “He didn’t do a very good job of … Most of our guys improve. As you look at the careers of guys who have been with us, they all get better. Jamar flattened out.”

As a sophomore, Samuels was one of K-State’s most explosive players and was named Big 12 Sixth Man of the Year. He averaged 11 points and 4.9 rebounds and had moments of brilliance, including three double-doubles.

As a junior, his scoring average dropped to 8.5 points and his rebounding average went up to 5.4. Not horrible. But not a step forward, either.

Martin knows what held Samuels back.

“He didn’t do a very good job of improving himself in the weight room and the gym,” Martin said. “He was asked to play a lead role last year. He tried, but he just couldn’t do it. Part of it was that he didn’t properly prepare himself. He needs to have a better summer and weigh more than 205 pounds. It’s hard to succeed in high-major Division I basketball when you weigh 205 pounds.”

Martin hopes he can ask more out of Samuels next season the same way he is McGruder and Spradling, but in order for that to happen Samuels will need to put work in this summer.

That’s his challenge.

“He didn’t do it last year,” Martin said. “I’m not saying that I’m losing faith that he can do it this year, but he needs to show that he is going to be different. He needs to be different in who he is this time of year so he can be better prepared for when next season rolls around.”

"I’m done depending on him," Martin said. "For three years we’ve been trying to get him to be more consistent, more mature – and he hasn’t done it."

"If he’s right, he’s right," he added. "If not, we’ve got other guys in place."

Dude's got potential.  Just needs to get his head out of Jamarland and focus.
