He's good at basketball otherwise he wouldn't average 8ppg, .5 blocks, 5 rebounds; numbers where aren't abysmal by any stretch.
Jamar is an offensive option, he will never be the go-to guy.  And I don't agree that he's skinny, he's lean- but he's strong as eff and knows how to use his body in the paint.

You're right on the focus part.  This has always has been problem with him.

That's good.  Now, does anyone that isn't Fake Sugar Dick (WARNING, NOT THE REAL SUGAR DICK!) have an opinion?

that's good, are there any hayseeds who don't have a load of Copenhagen in their mouth have an opinion?

I think the 201 pounds is more shocking than the 233 pounds.  Rule of thumb being 5 pounds per inch of height he would have been the equivalent of a 165 lb 6'0 guy.

5 pounds per inch?? At 6 foot you would be 360 lbs... Um.. No..

sorry bud but unless you're 6 foot 360lbs, you're apparently not big enough to play on this team.

I swear, we've heard about Jamar's "big gains" every off season since he got here.  Yet, he's still skinny and plays like a pussy down low.  I'll be impressed when I see him actually banging in the post.

Wrong.  He may not be big enough or skilled enough to be what you want him to be but he plays very tough down low.  He's as JYC as anyone we have.

Jamar is not physically or mentally equipped to be an impact player for this team.  That's a fact.  He may have improved over the summer.  I hope he has.  We need him.  But, to date, Jamar has been mentally and physically dissapointing.

Per Frank Martin -

“He’s got to become better as a player. He’s flattened out,” Martin said. “He didn’t do a very good job of … Most of our guys improve. As you look at the careers of guys who have been with us, they all get better. Jamar flattened out.”

As a sophomore, Samuels was one of K-State’s most explosive players and was named Big 12 Sixth Man of the Year. He averaged 11 points and 4.9 rebounds and had moments of brilliance, including three double-doubles.

As a junior, his scoring average dropped to 8.5 points and his rebounding average went up to 5.4. Not horrible. But not a step forward, either.

Martin knows what held Samuels back.

“He didn’t do a very good job of improving himself in the weight room and the gym,” Martin said. “He was asked to play a lead role last year. He tried, but he just couldn’t do it. Part of it was that he didn’t properly prepare himself. He needs to have a better summer and weigh more than 205 pounds. It’s hard to succeed in high-major Division I basketball when you weigh 205 pounds.”

Martin hopes he can ask more out of Samuels next season the same way he is McGruder and Spradling, but in order for that to happen Samuels will need to put work in this summer.

That’s his challenge.

“He didn’t do it last year,” Martin said. “I’m not saying that I’m losing faith that he can do it this year, but he needs to show that he is going to be different. He needs to be different in who he is this time of year so he can be better prepared for when next season rolls around.”

It doesn't sound like Frank was talking about Jamar's "big gains" last year. Quite the contrary, actually.

It doesn't sound like Frank was talking about Jamar's "big gains" last year. Quite the contrary, actually.

Never said Frank was the one inflating Jamar's offseason gains.  Just said we've been hearing about it since he was a freshman.

Jamar in 2009:  “(Because of the redshirt) I got used to the physical contact of the Big 12 and of college basketball, period. I gained an extra 30 pounds, so I’m feeling pretty good now.”  Samuels was 6-7, 215-pounds in January of 2009.

http://www.big12sports.com/ViewArticle.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=10410&ATCLID=3644308

Jamar in 2010:  "This is Scott Greenawalt's shirt, right here," Samuels beamed, pointing to the K-State Powercat Strength inscription. "I won it when I won the strongman competition. Me, winning the strongman competition."

Jamar in 2011:  Went from 201-233lbs.  He now weighs 15lbs more than he did 2.5 years ago.

If the guy is jacked.  Great.  I'll believe it when I see it.  I've heard in the past that he's a warrior in the weight room.  But, then I see him on the court and he looks exactly like he did when he was a freshman.

Like I said.  He's got potential.  We need him.  But, I'm not going to get excited about him until he shows me he's more than a 6th man reserve option.

"He doesn't look like a lizard anymore," Martin said of Samuels' new physique. "He actually looks like a Division-I athlete now ? you can tell right away that he's a stronger player. He's not going to get knocked around as much."

"He's made a commitment to making himself better. Now he has to be consistent with that."

frank would say those things about him regardless of his past performance.  that's how he motivates.

i liken jamar to a gazelle (because of his running style).  also reminds me of how kevin lewis would run, way back when.

He does look quite a bit bigger.

he's rough ridin' huge.  i don't think that kind of muscle gain is natural at his age.

so probably dumb, but did he think he'd drop some weight or stay the same and be some kind of outside specialist dropping bombs and be super fast and then when it became apparent that he couldn't, he finally put the weight (back) on? thoughts?

i don't think martin would be calling him an fp, tc if he had lost weight by design.  i imagine he was just resistant to taking whatever substances the staff felt he needed to better develop his body.
