Day 4:

On day 3, the VP, trying to be hospitable and make a good impreesion on the new guy, told me that they have some unclaimed box seat tickets for a Reds/Cubs game if I'm interested. On day 4, German girl came into the conference room office and announced the same thing. My boss, with zero hesitation, says, "Sure! I'll take them!"

Day 5 recap is better. I'm off. Company holiday. Good Friday!

Well you had day 3 to claim those tickets if you wanted them and you didn't so why shouldn't someone else get them?  :dunno:

I don't want the tickets. It's funny because I'm pretty sure VP had just told German girl to go offer them to me in particular, she didn't make it clear she was talking directly to me, and my boss swooped right in.

yeah, pretty great that he didn't give you an opportunity to accept. You know he's taken them before.

you should have taken the tickets even if you didn't want them.  then offered one to him even though you know he couldn't go.  it's bonding crap.  like when your father in law offers you a pint of his famous home brew that has mold on it and looks and smells like crap, you just take it and force it down.

I am confused by this. Obviously the boss could go because he took the tickets.

Anyone have any experience working with friends? My company is pretty small but growing like crazy, one of my BFF's is looking for a new job and I'm about 99% sure I can get him hired.

Pro's Con's? It's probably going to happen anyways, just looking for some feedback. Thanks, I'll listen off air.

Actually it probably just depends on the type of job.

I would never do the hire the friend thing if I had to supervise them or manage them in any way.  No way jose.  And, I'd only get a friend a job if I thought that they were very trustworthy and willing to put forth effort.  Just hooking a bro up ain't going to happen...you gotta deserve the shot, IMO.

I always tell buds that I'll get them the interview. It's up to them to get the job. I'd never hire a friend as a direct report.

I recommended a friend for a peer position a few years ago. He's kicking ass and running a different division now.

Put another friend's resume on my boss's desk as a courtesy. We reviewed it with some others. Didn't make the cut.

I don't know if I'd do it in a small company though. Not enough separation of duties perhaps.

Depends on the job.  Is it a pud sales job?  Get him in then he either sells or doesn't.  Generally grunt or easily filled positions it's nbd.

The extent that you go out of your way to get the friend the job is the extent that their performance will reflect on you.

The two other guys that I work with played ball together in college and worked at another company previous to this together. They get along great. We're all competitve and have fun. One of them is a former globetrotter and still does events on the side.  :surprised:
