South East Asians and Indians definitely. Europeans, particularly Germans are next. Americans are pretty low. What's kind of interesting is that between all these groups English is the common language just as in Europe. It really is the global language.

Cool stuff 7. Do you get hassled for being a gringo taking pictures by any of the Chinese cops? Like do they think you might be a deep cover spy sent to take pictures of the great wall/random buildings?

No, in fact the police are much nicer to foreigners. I have asked several for help with directions because they have so many random barriers that it can be confusing on where you're supposed to go and they are always very helpful. At id checks they have many times grabbed me out of line and waved me past without looking at my passport. They really only care about controlling their citizens. The control on freedom of movement through the country is another pretty big shock as an American.

That said I'm not trying to take pictures of police or military crap.  And I think they even mentioned to not do that when I did my visa interview.

I do get noticed for 3 big reasons though. 1) white, 2) blond, 3) big beard. All three are rare here so I'm like a trifecta. I notice (VERY ATTRACTIVE) women staring at me a lot. Dudes mostly ignore me but I've had several old Chinese men make a motion about my beard and give a huge smile and thumbs up.

Not particularly big at the moment. Maybe 2" off the chin.

Limited English was somewhat common in Beijing so pointing and hand gestures were usually enough. The Beijing metro is honestly the best marked and easiest to navigate system I've been to, it's all signed in English.

In Xi'an no one speaks any English and very few signs are in English. It's very rough and plenty of things like mandatory app usage for certain things (like ordering an ice-cream cone today) in apps that are only in Chinese. Screen translate through Google lens is invaluable. Service employees are very quick to whip out their phone for speech to text translating though and that works good enough.

China is virtually a cashless society now. Shops technically still have to take cash but I've read they won't have change because it's so rare. I have seen someone use cash only once so far and it was an Indian family. They are also cardless, so nowhere takes credit cards. Instead the entire payment system hinges on two apps, alipay and wechat. Chinese link their bank accounts to the app and foreigners can link a credit card. All payments are done through qr code scans. Even street vendors use these exclusively. These apps are also loaded with "mini-apps" that run through the main app and handle basically everything in life. Plane/train tickets, food delivery, taxis, ordering at any chain, dinner reservations at nicer places. You name it. Wechat is also one of the main social media platforms (I think similar to Facebook), and it's absolutely what Elon is trying to turn Twitter into.

Of course the government and it's overarching control are the facilitators of these systems, but they are pretty damn convenient.

My cousin lived in Beijing for a decade and suggested it. It's the historical capital of China and the Eastern end of the silk road. It also has a large ethnic Muslim population. It's considered western China even though it might be east of the center line (hello western Kansas debate). Also the terracotta warriors are here, but I'm not sure if I'm going to go see them. It's a national holiday here that happened to fall on thurs-sat so it's busy as crap with lots of people treating it as a 4 day weekend type vacation.

Also, Chinese food rules and it's by far the best overall that I've had outside the US. Like usually it's a struggle every day because the foreign food I like is actually just americanized (Tex-Mex, pepperoni pizza, chicken parm, etc) but fried rice and fried noodles are actual Chinese staples and rough ridin' delicious everywhere and cheap as crap.

Did you get a burner phone? When I landed in Hong Kong in a layover I wouldn't even turn my phone on.

I'm not eating at the Wuhan wet market. I don't have any idea of the regulations here but I haven't seen anything concerning. You can't drink the water though.
