Last fall I won a raffle for a free trip to Cancun to an all inclusive (Sun Palace).  Resort looks decent enough, but I'm going in with 0 expectations because, at worst, it'll be free mediocre drinks/food and 4 days on the beach (i am perfectly fine with mediocre food/drinks).

Booked it for March.  What a great thing.

Are they going to try and pitch you on a vacation club?
I don't think so.

Spring break timing was Mrs. DQ's idea (she's in grad school).

Anyone here did an Alaskan cruise?  Alumni Association has one in August.  Never had any interest in cruises, but this has me curious.

My aunt did and loved it. She's not a cruise person either.

Dude, agreed. I've never had a desire to go on a cruise, but those things seem more my speed. Naturally though, they cost a lot more bread.

Every once in a while I’ll spend an hour looking Viking cruises, but I know I’ll never spend the money.

To me the appeal of a cruise is fresh open breeze and/or breathtaking scenery.

Viking Cruises keeps the worst part of the cruise experience, (the close proximity to gross smelly people and bad food), and replaces the best part of a cruise, the Caribbean Sea or Alaskan glaciers and replaces them with gross ass muddy European rivers. Hard pass

Also I think it replaces the young poor partytime people with old tired rich people. Give me the former of if I have to choose.

My mom did a couple European river cruises on a barge with her friends and raved about it. They chartered their own barge and I think between the size and not having a bunch of strangers took away most of the big complaints about cruises.

The only barge i associate with is GAS BARGE.

FWIW, I love typical, crappy Caribbean cruises.  I know they get a lot of hate, but I think they're great fun.  Gimme the all you can eat pizza at 9 am.  Gimme the crappy drinks.  Gimme the group macarana dance by the pool.  Gimme the 2 hours to explore the tourist zoo at the Nassau port.  Gimme the hilariously campy nightly entertainment in the theater. Gimme it all!

"Ah yes, but you don't get to enjoy all the culture Cozumel has to offer," yeah but did you know there's a casino right on this boat?

My parents did a couple of Viking cruises and loved them.  Their most recent one was in France and the river was too low to move the boat with passengers.  They would bus the passengers to the different ports and then have them sleep on the boat.  They were not impressed.

I have no interest in traditional cruises, but I watch a lot of cruise reviews on YouTube for some reason. Everything dlew listed are my favorite parts. I can't imagine being stuck around that many people though and will stick with ground based AI's.

I'm very interested in a Rhine river cruise though and would only do viking. The smaller ships and old timey ports seem right up my alley. Pretty pricey tho.

How much bread are we talking about? I kind of feel like doing something spontaneous, as I'm inspired by my good friend ss7.

Never been on a cruise, but here to spoil Cozumel.  It doesn't have anything else to offer, really, other than a lot of nothing.  Nothing is what I went for, and it really delivered!

I think with the price of Viking cruises you get good food & no gross smelly people. I’ve been on the Rhine River for a couple hours & enjoyed it. I think it would be a good way to travel. For me it’s more about a different way to travel Europe, but when it would come time to pay I think I’d just end up saving money & traveling around Europe by train/hotel.

They have some of those euro river cruises that are built for families and I think that could be a good way to expose the kids to a lot of new stuff with minimal PITA parenting/logistics. I think AMA Waterways does some.

Yeah, viking's audience is 55+, ama focuses on younger/more active people.
