if you just assume that every flight you take in 2023 will be late, cancelled or diverted, you'll be right more often than not.

35m international early enough in the day to final destination I’d probably roll the dice, but any other situation probably safe to work under the assumption it’ll be mumped and plan accordingly imo

I've taken 20 flights this year with little more than a slight delay. In NYC they tend to pad flight times a ton so I've probably had more early arrivals than delays. Had one connection scare but the connecting flight was delayed as well so all good.

We are travelling for vacation so it isn't like I would miss a wedding or important meeting if we missed the second flight. The US --> London flight is overnight so I'm mostly wanting to avoid spending a prolonged time in the airport with bored and tired kids. My mom missed an international flight at DFW earlier this summer and spent most of a day stuck in the terminal there.

35 minute layover with kids for an international flight seems like certain failure

I can't tell if prolonged time in an airport is why you're considering a short layover or why you would avoid it. On the way out will the kids really be a problem if they hang out in a terminal for like an hour or 2? If the price is the same and times aren't an issue shoot for at least an hour and don't take the last London flight of the day.

Last two trips (delayed means more than an hour)

Delayed, delayed, cancelled, paid to take later flight, find out later today but on time as of now.

I had to spend the night in the Dublin airport, once. They actually close the terminal after something stupid like 10 PM, so I just had to hang out in the pre-security area until like 8 AM. Had a very satisfying full-english and a beer at that time, though.

Not trying to be obtuse, it just seemed odd that Google Flights listed 2-3 flights with connecting times of 35 - 60 min as the "best flights" for my destination.
The kids would be fine for 3 -4 hrs in the airport. Just wanting to avoid missing a connection and getting stuck overnight.
I ended up booking a flight thru Chicago that has a 2 1/2 hr layover which should be an ideal amount of time to find the next terminal, snacks, etc.

I'm guessing Google said those flights were best because of the combo of price and total travel time.

Spent the weekend down at Big Cedar near Branson.  Pretty impressive place.  Would be great for families, though a bit pricey.

We just booked a 2 bedroom cabin thing there for 4 nights in mid October when we have our school fall break. Pretty excited to take the kids. We aren't an outdoorsy family (probably because I grew up on a cattle ranch and had enough of it) and am looking forward to renting a boat and taking the kids tubing, wave runners, fishing, all that stuff. Gotta figure out what to book for restaurants and activities so pro-tips from everyone is very welcome. Going Tue-Sat because we have a football game Sunday.

water temp will still be in the 70s so if the weather is dece watersports are no problem and even if it is cool and cloudy most kids can get on and off a tube without really getting wet

Yup, water temps should berpretty good still. Heck it's usually warmer to be in the water than out.

Water in the 70s is not enjoyable by any stretch w/o a wetsuit or whatever those things are.  :ohno: (<- but because cold)

Amtrak transfer in CHI. The line to Milwaukee is the Hiawatha Express I think, runs a few times a day, in case the chief is late, which it often is.

MKE <-> GB a bunch of bars do shuttles. $50 a person round trip, can bring booze on the bus. Some buses have open bars on the bus but I don't trust myself to not overdo it and miss the whole damn game.

Rented a car to get back, didn't want to do the train both ways and that way we can leave earlier than the train on the way back will get us back.

I've been bumming around the Colorado mountain towns for the last 4 days, thinking about abandoning my family and just doing it full time.

Sounds dreamy.

When my parents kick the bucket, I'm going to pull my RV to different parts of the country. Stay a month or two. Might settle down in the place I like the most.
