This is what happens when you do cattle call seating. We all knew the reaper would need to be paid.

Lol, SD, love you, but obv that isn't the issue.

Would suck to see them ride off into the sunset like this. SW has been my #2 airline for over a decade, but this is absolutely abhorrent.

That being said, they'll survive, but it'll take a long, long time to rebuild.

Southwest used to be a Harvard Business Review case study on successful operations.  For years and years I flew southwest every week, and I was very pleased with them...they were cheaper and more reliable than the others.  Looks like they are going to wind up getting a second HBR case study.   :frown:

The Southwest breakdown seems like a super interesting logistics problem to me. My Elon Musk level of understanding is that the point to point model is the primary culprit here. I'd guess the newest iteration of airline software wouldn't actually help much at all to overcome it. And that they'd need radically different software and computers than airlines typically use to solve it.

I don’t see how they survive this

If they tank get ready to add 20% onto fares at the other carriers.

It's certainly possible they have to file for bankruptcy, but then emerge from it. I'm concerned about their ability to pay the bills, and then their ability to service their debt if they have to take out loads of emergency credit.

That's not what I'm saying. I'm saying I'm rooting for them. Especially since one of my best friends works for them. I can only imagine how shitty his job is right now.

it’s too bad that they have $13b of cash sitting on their balance sheet, and that they took $7b in federal assistance during c19 that they used for stock buybacks.  and that they just raised their ceo’s compensation package to $9m annually.

really the software issue, while a legitimate issue, is contributing to the problem but not the cause.

in hindsight that buyback was not a strong move.

Friend had their flight cancelled 2 days ago so this is still working itself out. I'm getting nervous about my Feb trip. I spent a crap ton on concert tix. Has anyone bought any type of travel insurance that is worth it for this sort of situation?

Anyone who has worked for a large multi-billion dollar company that keeps legacy decades old systems limping along can feel the frustration of SWA employees.

I suspect paralysis from the price tag and fear of making the wrong decision in changing platforms.  Made even more ridiculous by the stack of cash they're sitting on.

Travel insurance won't keep your flight on time. The value of travel insurance was much higher before the passenger bill of rights. Most of the crap that insurance would cover is kinda obsolete now, airlines are now obligated to reimburse you for a lot of things they previously weren't. The insurance is now mostly good for you getting sick. Knowing how insurance payouts generally go, I wouldn't think it would be real easy to cash in on one if you get COVID.

The travel industry as a whole is largely operating on crap 90s computer technology.  I can't speak to how much worse Southwest's was specifically, but I hope this is a warning to a lot of people to invest in necessary upgrades.

Did KSU ever officially announce that the hoops team is playing in the Bahamas next year? I'm pretty sure I saw something, but I can't find any official announcement or dates?
