In two weeks, i'm going to a vendor fair at Southern Illinois. Work wants me to drive there and back in the same day ----> :sdeek:. Anyways, they gave me the choice of renting a car or using my own and getting mileage for it. Boss says you can make more $ by taking your own car, but I don't want the mileage on my new car. What would you do?

when most companies send you on a business trip, they're going to dictate how you get there as a way to control time and cost

"hey clams, need you to go to ethiopia"
"ok, i'll drive"

Since i'm a team player, i'm doing this bitch. Everyone freaks out about staying on budget, so i'll go with it. Leave at 9 am, get there at 1, lunch, setup and vendor till 5 and back by 9. Sleep in the following morning and come in. As long as this isn't a common trend, I can play along.

Wouldn't it make more sense just to get a hotel? When you live in the Midwest driving four hours is meh.

I guess, but i've already allocated my trips for the quarter and we've never made a relationship with this school before. I guess if you add a hotel to the budget, you also add in another day for the rental car and food. This would not be happening if it was at Carbondale tho. That's for sure. Not worth the risk.

If you truly have an issue with driving the 8 hours in one day, and they absolutely won't pay you should consider taking on the additional expense on your own, it's completely tax deductible; hotel, meals, and the car.

Wacky's company sounds gross.  Some sort of nationwide dental chain restaurant corporation.  Like, why is that necessary and who the eff would actually visit one of those?

And that's where it ends.   The company should only care about paying mileage or the reimbursement for travel.  If he chooses to rent a car himself for his own reasons, what does that change anything?     If he told them he'd drive, then the day of his car wouldn't start and he rented a car, why would they care if they aren't expected to pay for it?

wait, so you're only going to be at the vendor fair for like 3 hours?   I think we assumed you were doing a full day.

eff, we had a PM and a supt. drive all the way to Little Rock Sunday to look at a job and were back in the office by noon Monday and worked the day out.

what's so confusing?
a company is going to pay for their employees to take the low cost option which in this case is renting a car.

What am I missing here? Do I really have two non-traveling dorks like TBT and M^2 making a big deal out of this? I'm not surprised.

Yeah, it's what my company would want anyways. They tell ppl to do that all the time who travel late.
