Every other airline you pick your seat when you buy the ticket.

this isn't always true. I travel semi-late notice all the time and can't pick a seat. (But since I'm United Silver, I check in 24 hours early to make sure I can get a decent economy plus upgrade, basically like SW.) And even if you can pick, there's a tons of times you can't get multiple seats seats together when traveling as a couple/group.

and one reason I think open seating can be an advantage is you can choose WHO you sit by, which can make a bigger impact than where. There are pros and cons to both but it's pretty cute to think that getting to choose an economy aisle is sitting in the lap of luxury relative to SW.

Flying with 3 kids is a real damn treat.  Oldest LSOC has flown all over the country, she now knows sleeping is the best way to get from MCI to LAX and when she gets there we will go straight to Manhattan beach for her to wig out and burn off some steam.  That is the best part for her.

Toddler stone rides in the CARES thing sd uses and infant stone the full ass car seat.  we go 2 kids and mrs. stone in the aisle then me aisle with oldest stone in middle.  I bribe her like a south american politician to be cool

I'd travel with your crew any day

I think you have to be an insane person to cite open seating as a SW advantage. Every other airline you pick your seat when you buy the ticket. Checking in 24 hrs before flight to make sure you're not stuck in the middle, gmafb

Agreed, definitely not a +

this works out great if you're a fat dude cause no one wants to sit by you.  i don't know how many times i've had no one in the middle seat on an otherwise full or nearly full plane.

Southwest positives - 2 times ago when I flew them b/c work bought the tickets and I had no choice, I paid the $12 on my own to get the boarding bump or whatever and not get stuck w/my coworker, and last time when I was stuck flying them and had a fat lady spilling onto me I disputed the charge and cited SW's fat policy and didn't have to end up paying for the flight.

You'd probably want to do 3-4 to justify traveling all the way to vancouver.  Vancouver's cheap b/c canada.  All the prices seem reasonable by american standards and you charge everything and you get your bill and it all ends up having been 30% off.

If it's expensive to fly there, get a cheap direct flight on alaska air from kc to seattle and take a $50 train up or an alaska air flight via avios for 7500 each way.

Alaska credit card would take care of your flights, any hotel card would take care of your rooms, pretty easy to make that a free trip by next spring.

It's July.  What better way to get into "the game" then by having a defined goal and a long timeline in which to complete it.

You'd be doing the half-saul experience.  I recommend it.  If you're gonna travel all that way, might as well knock out two cities (countries?) to PAK in on one trip when they're so easy to go back and forth between.

Train ride flies by.  There's wifi until you get to canada (DON'T FORGET TO GET INT'L FOR THE COUPLE DAYS), and booze and food.  But yeah, the flight is a lot better if you can get avios to blow.  You only pay like $40 in taxes and it's less than an hour.  We did train up and flight back.

Chicago is a fantastic place to spend a few days exploring. Portland is very easy to do alone. Boston, Austin maybe?
