it's always awkward going to lunch or dinner or something with a friend that's a girl when it comes to the time for the check

oddly, i agree with wacky.  socializing with members of the opposite sex at lunch or when traveling for work is normal.  making plans to socialize with someone other than your spouse for an entirely non-work (non-hobby, whatever) occasion instead of spending time with your spouse is weird.  it doesn't mean you're rough ridin' or wanting to eff, it's just weird.  obviously, there are situations where it would not be weird, like your spouse is in south africa for the month or whatever.  this is about the typical, not the unusual.

there are a limited number of hours in the day, many of which you are already trapped at work or elsewhere away from your spouse.  many of which are consumed by unpleasant, but obligatory chores like cutting the lawn or cleaning the mice.  when you do have a few hours available to recreate, preferring to do so with someone who isn't your spouse is weird.

like, you give your pet mice a mouse bath?

Maybe if sys and his wife would work together on give the mice a bath, it would be more efficient and they could spend that time together.

If I had a business trip that I were supposed to take to Chanute, I'd probably decline to drive a female coworker there.

Can we get back to travel? Guess I'm going back to Europe in Oct for a buddy's bachelor party. Only 4 of us going, most likely itinerary is Munich, then Madrid. 6 days.

OAK is a ridiculously small airport.    I LOL'd when I figured out than Terminal 1 & 2 are actually the same building.

Thanks! I've heard the night life in Madrid is crazy, so we're going to try to get to some clubs.

Se grada de familia is pretty great. Go see Columbus square. El Jamon de negra is the crap. Probably the same thing as Iberia, but eat lots of it.

EDIT: you said Madrid, never mind.
