If it was me, I would center the trip around the ability to walk to the absolute best reviewed fish taco and sushi joints in the city daily.

los angeles is horrible.  i'd just stay in your hotel as much as possible.

if you're gonna be downtown hit up grand central market - go early and you can reward yourself with eggslut - if you make it late have the best pastrami sandwich you've ever had at wexler's.

not sure what you're into either but go paddle boarding with wade one morning, http://www.yelp.com/biz/stand-up-paddleboarding-with-wade-marina-del-rey then go brunch in venice or main st in santa monica afterwards.

tips on traffic:

if you're gonna be driving during the week leave before 8am - if you don't then you should wait until 9:45 or 10 - this isn't universal, but if you're going anywhere >10 miles that's what you'll want to do.

in the afternoon same rule applies but its worse 4-7pm are the times you'd prefer to avoid - whatever you do don't end up on the westside (SM, Venice, Culver City, etc) and then try to go east in the afternoon. Leave by 3:30 or you're effed - same goes for the 405 north at that time but its usually a bit better before then.

Ubers are everywhere and are there within 3 minutes 99% of the time, Uberx is especially cheap.

The biggest difference between Dallas and LA (and there are very few) is definitely traffic. If you live in Dallas and you visit LA, you will not be used to such a sprawling metro area with so many freeways and tens of millions of cars and really high overpasses and stuff like that

btw when I said LA I meant like 40 minutes from LA in Westlake Village

I did notice I'm near some kind of national forest mountain type thing so I'll prob check that out, then go into town this weekend to do touristy type stuff

definitely the biggest difference from Dallas is the traffic, insane drivers, and massively overbuilt freeway system.  also LA is so big and sprawled out, which is very different from DFW.

took a brand new AA A321.  elite plane.  was seated next to massive fat guy (likely KU fan) who took up half my seat.  flight attendant noticed and came over.

flight attendant: sir, would you like me to move you to somewhere where you have some more room?
fat guy: no this is fine
gfa: smh

about a minute later she came back and looked at me and said very lightly "well sir, you have long legs, would you like to move to the emergency exit row?"  of course I said yes and got moved and didn't have to suffer with a fat guy all up in my business for three hours.  god bless that flight attendant.

the patio at moonshadow's in the 'bu is a pretty elite spot to get lunch and also get pak'd, it's just down the canyon from where you're at

I just got back from NYC. stayed at the Andaz 5th Ave, ate at Spotted Pig and Gramercy Tavern. watched the royals really late two nights and then the cats the last night and I'm wiped out. the us airways club between C & D in charlotte has been re-branded as an admirals club already and has all the usual admirals club snacks and booze and stuff. used to not have complimentary booze when it was a us air club iirc so that's good. I don't really like the charlotte airport fwiw. just not an enjoyable stop. except for the bathroom attendant that is super good at his job and tells you he will watch your bags so they don't get pee on them and is aggressive about giving directions and stuff. he is a treat. second time running into him in like 4 months. his tip box was really full of singles.

also had tea/booze at the new Park Hyatt. really nice place. like, the bar/lobby area on the 3rd floor had more bar/concierge staff than people there drinking. seems like the place to be if they ever open up reward bookings. it was going for $900+ a night when we were there so we used points and stayed at the Andaz instead.

Going to LA tomorrow. Couple days of checking out Hollywood, beaches, and architecture (Getty Center and Bradbury Building, probably more). San Diego zoo for a day followed by dinner and drinks downtown. Then four days of Disneyland.

Well, I'm going with the wife, so we're doing things in which we have a mutual interest. If I was going solo, or with a bud, the itinerary would look much different. I'll let you know if we're stranded in LA for 2+ weeks.
