Was there in 1997 with the US Navy. We had so much fun in Old San Juan. Tips are spot on. I would add a trip to the rain forest, too. I like exploring natural crap.

North lake cats:

I have never been up north around the great lakes and am looking to put together a trip for the whole fam this summer.  I am wanting to drive from KC.  Probably looking at either side of Lake Michigan. I like the idea of getting a house on the lake or as close to on a lake as possible.  Want a laid back week.

Who has north lake experience?  What are some good spots?  What are some things to make sure we don't miss?  What are some things that suckers all think everyone should do, but that I should avoid because they actually suck?

do a snorkeling excursion thing.  try and get one with lots of booze.

i wasn't a big snorkeler and my wife was pretty scared of it, but down there it's incredible.  lots of cool crap to see, and the water is so salty that you can float on your tummy with basically no effort.  basically would have to try to drown.

The northerners I used to work with loved the crap out of Mackinac Island.  I’m guessing @michigancat has the best upper Midwest travel pro tips.

I did very little there but Northern Michigan is very nice. I wouldn't recommend snorkeling though.

Be wary of Mexican food in the south (like seafood in the midwest) (unless you are in the part of the south that is texas)
