On our way to Barafu Camp. Kibo loomin large.

This is why you bring your own toilet.

Barafu Camp, Elevation 15,250. We “sleep” here for an afternoon before midnight summit attempt.
I've said it before and I'll say it again, K-State fans could have beheaded the entire KU team at midcourt, and K-State fans would be celebrating it this morning.  They are the ISIS of Big 12 fanbases.

Don’t want to miss the bathroom in the dark - that’s a 500’ cliff.

Mt. Meru above the clouds.

Time to try to sleep for a few hours....

After five freezing hours, exhausted, Stella Point at sunrise. We made it! From here an easy stroll along caldera rim to summit.

The massive caldera below.

Glaciers way bigger than I imagined.

Paragliders taking off from Stella Point. Sadly, this man crashed and died seconds after this picture was taken. Saw the whole thing. It was horrible. Really sad. Rumor is that his wife was also waiting to take off and saw it.

Here’s what we ascended in the dark. You can just see high camp in the distance, 4,000 feet below.

What do you get if you get to the top of this thing?

You get a snazzy certificate (which appears to have printed on a circa-1999 inkjet). And a trove of kickass pictures.

why is there so much hiking at night

So this is something we wondered, too. It had a little bit to do with weather possibly rolling in in the afternoon, although you could start hours later and still be fine. Our guides acknowledged that one reason is so that you can’t really see just how daunting the ascent is. You just have to keep trudging until sunrise. I’m not sure that’s a good reason to freeze. Man it was cold. About 4am is when people really started breaking down.

In CO hiking needs to be finished early in the afternoon because static electricity and freak lightning etc.  Wonder if it's the same there...

Yeah that part where KSUdub got a picture of the guy right before he died was nuts.  Pics are crazy cool though.

The views were spectacular. It was VERY cold at times. Here's some class 3 terrain. Watched a man  violently die. The food cranked out from the mess tent was surprisingly tasty!
