Totally depends. If it's highway with average traffic, miles will suffice. If it's a path slowed way down by traffic or something else, time.

Off the cuff I would say miles but then I think about it and I have no rough ridin' clue how far it is from Omaha to Manhattan but I know it's a three hour drive and I have no clue how many miles a flight from LA to Kauai is but I know it's 5 hours and 45 minutes.
