I've said it before, and I'll say it again, the Staten Island Ferry/booze cruise is a great and free (minus the extremely reasonable cost of the tall boys) way to spend and afternoon or evening in NYC.

I am going to do this next trip.  talk it up to mrs. dave as some romantic sail boat dinner event or something.

rusty you'll like hell's kitchen's restaurant row which has a ton of international food restaurants(Ninth Street does a big international food festival in may), check out the lower east side at night for some cool bars/live music.  The bohemian in you will appreciate the East Village.  And you should head uptown to Harlem and see Rucker Park @ 155th St, it's right across the river from Yankee Stadium.

Yeah, go to some bars at eat food and listen to music. You know, something you can't do anywhere else in the world.  It's your first time, just go to all the touristy places like the statue of liberty and stuff. It's fun. Maybe go see the Balto statue in central park. Or Ellis Island.

Walking around will take a lot of time, be the best place for cheap knock-off type shopping.  Do not eat at or agree to eat at a chain restaurant and you'll save a lot.  China town was a good time, but don't go at night.

Should expand this thread to "weekend trips" in general.  Looking for something similar this summer with similar needs(inexpensive, cool crap to do, etc)

I was thinking Chicago.

I have taken quite a few weekend trips to chi. what do you want/like to do? My tip is to stay by Midway or O'Hare and take the train downtown. Save a lot on hotels (which will prob. be the most expensive part of your trip)

Good tip on hotel.

I really want to see the industry museum/aquarium/hist museum.  Wife will prob want none of that.  I imagine she is just up for shopping.  We will prob do a two day trip and spend one day in one of the museums and one day doing her thing.

Chicago is great for a short trip.  The Improv Comedy shows there were a good time when I went.  The public transportation is great and cheap and the restaurants will lead you to be like LSOC and think something better is just a block away.  Aquarium is a great call too.

I went up to Chicago for a weekend for a concert once.  Ate at this pizza place that was pretty amazing.  Do NOT remember the name of the place.  Oh well.

I don't remember where I was at in the city, as we were taking the blue line downtown, then hopping on the red line somewhere to head over to where the concert was.  However, sometime before getting to my first stop, the train stopped and we all had to get off and get on a bus that took us somewhere and when we got off that we went and ate, then we found out where the hell we were at and headed over to the concert hall.

I seriously started looking for jobs there like right when I got back.

I don't think I could point to a single thing. In all seriousness, probably just walking around neighborhoods and using yelp to find the best hole-in-the-wall restaurant nearby. Seriously traveled with a great group that was down for about anything.

Best thing to do there. You are a dumbass if you go to NY with a plan.
