weekend in NYC
« on: May 06, 2011, 10:52:46 AM »
taking a weekend in NYC just for fun (my first  ). I'm traveling with some pretty poor planners and don't want to just sit around. I want to see moma and/or guggenheim, but beyond that, I just want to have the most fun for the least amount of money (because I'm cheap).

What should I do? :ck:

Should expand this thread to "weekend trips" in general.  Looking for something similar this summer with similar needs(inexpensive, cool crap to do, etc)

I was thinking Chicago.

I have taken quite a few weekend trips to chi. what do you want/like to do? My tip is to stay by Midway or O'Hare and take the train downtown. Save a lot on hotels (which will prob. be the most expensive part of your trip)

My wife and I only had 8 hrs in NYC a couple summers ago so we took the DD bus tour which included passes around the statue of liberty and to the top of the Empire State Building. I know everyone will say this is lame but NYC is scary when you've never been before and you're alone. It was nice to be taken around without having to think about stuff, you know.

hmmmm, your cheapness makes me think you may enjoy taking the subway down to canal street tons buy tons of cheap knock off stuff.  it's really fascinating how the guys standing out front quietly say, "COUGHguccibagsinbackifyouwanttocheckthemoutCOUGH" as you walk by.  What part of town are you staying in?  I bet GOSP can tell you all the cool hipster places/free music type stuff that's going on.

Good tip on hotel.

I really want to see the industry museum/aquarium/hist museum.  Wife will prob want none of that.  I imagine she is just up for shopping.  We will prob do a two day trip and spend one day in one of the museums and one day doing her thing.

The most fun I have had on the very cheap in NYC, was taking the subway out to Coney Island with a friend, buying some beers at a grocery store and walking around on the boardwalk people watching (brown bag laws) There are rides and hot dogs too if you are into that.

I am also looking to do something for a weekend but more local.  Maybe something that is a 3 hr drive or so.  I can be in KC in 3 hrs also can be in OKC in 3 hrs give or take.  It is my 10th aniversery this July and we don't have a lot of time to take off of work as my wife has used all her vacation and sick leave due to a extended time off work for medical issues.  Anyway was wanting to take her some where and have fun.

We love amusment parks (lame I know) but thought we would maybe go to one with out the kids and we could ride the big kids rides.  Is Worlds of Fun better than Frontier City that is in OKC?  Any other things that are in those locations worth checking out?  Night life etc...  Was going to get a pretty nice hotel.

Anybody here ever been to China? I'm trying to plan my next trip. China seems like it would be pretty cool, but I'd like some input.

One of the best times I have had in NYC was when mrs. dave had a conference and I just roamed around by myself for three days straight.

did that a while back.  I almost starved though because I kept holding out for a better restaurant, which I assumed was just on the next block.  I'd almost commit then decide to cross the street, or go another block.

If you're drunk around a Tannahill-esque cop when walking to your nice hotel, you'll be granted access to the PIA.

rusty you'll like hell's kitchen's restaurant row which has a ton of international food restaurants(Ninth Street does a big international food festival in may), check out the lower east side at night for some cool bars/live music.  The bohemian in you will appreciate the East Village.  And you should head uptown to Harlem and see Rucker Park @ 155th St, it's right across the river from Yankee Stadium.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again, the Staten Island Ferry/booze cruise is a great and free (minus the extremely reasonable cost of the tall boys) way to spend and afternoon or evening in NYC.
