ksu72RGAlmost on scholarshipPost #217HugotonMyFanPageAdd BuddyIgnore Lost KSU slogans ReplyCoach Vince Gibson, while at K-State brought in three slogans or catch phrases that became very popular. Purple Power; Purple Pride; and We Gonna Win! ( This one got started by Coach Gibson as he said it often to the press.) You have to know that before Gibson hit the campus we hadn't won a football game in three years, and KSU hadn't had a winning season in years. there was little if any school pride in football at all. Vince came in as we played our last season in the old stadium as our current football field was being built. Gibson brought in some stellar players to K-State on both sides of the ball as a head coach and caused a lot of excitementin wildcat land in the fall of 1967 and for the next few years under QB's Lynn Dickey and Steve Grogan. These slogans helped change the atmosphere on campus and helped propel pride in Kansas State's Wildcat Nation. I'm sorry to see they are not used any more, but I would like to think that at least Purple Power and Purple Pride ought to be used more with our current teams as well. They look great on T-shirts, buttons, and decals. Are there other slogans you can recall no longer used? What is your thoughts on these old slogans and KSU traditions. I am glad to see EMAW (Every Man A Wildcat) making a return to popularity. It predates Gibson, but I think it origins lie with our basketball heritage.Any one Know when EMAW was first used?12/29 11:24 PM | IP: LoggedAZPowercatPost #277MyFanPageAdd BuddyIgnore Re: Lost KSU slogans Replyksu72RG -I remember these and agree it would be nice to see these on some retro t-shirts, posters, etc. My favorite is "We Gonna Win". I wonder how many times I heard Vince promise that "this is our year to go to a bowl game."I know it's not a slogan, but we often repeated Vince's proclamation that "we have our mental and physical toughness. We gonna go out there, and we gonna hit hard."Anybody else remember the Gibson Girls? They were Vince's dates for recruits.Another memory is Vince's Sunday night TV shows with Fred White. They ended each show with a segment, "Purple Things and Other Things." They showed homemade crafts with a K-State Football theme that fans sent in.It's too bad Vince left town about three years before people started getting VCRs. I do have a handful of Jack Hartman shows. At tonight's game, I was remembering Jack's ongoing quest for rhythm in the offense, and his common reminder that the first two minutes of the second half is the most important part of the game.12/30 2:45 AM | IP: LoggedJEdgarNew walk-on to the teamPost #56MyFanPageAdd BuddyIgnore Re: Lost KSU slogans ReplyHit and Hustle Hit and Hustle. While you listened to Vince garble the english language, you could never doubt his passion. And then Mitch would say after a really big win "Wind it up foilks, it's a big Big BIg Big BIG BIG BIG BIG win!" I think nine "bigs" was his record. don't recall if Fred White, Steve Physioc or Greg Sharp had any unique calls? Another lost item from the stadium was back in the early to mid 70's after we would score TD the students would through rolls toilet paper. They would unwind in the air. I once brought 24 rolls of TP to through in about 1973. I recall we finally scored one TD and I threw all 24 rolls. Arm was sore. Many times the rolls would land harmlessly in a vacant section. This post was edited on 12/30 2:14 PM by gitrdone! Last, some will recall Growl Towels. I remember going out to the "old" airport, people on the runway, on the building.....just waiting for the plane of players to come rolling in!!! Vince also had a Lady Cat Club, where us gals got to learn more about the sport. One evening we got to go down on the field, with some of the players and see how plays are run.....then we had desserts! Believe Vince also said, "If ya cain't win, ya cain't stay". He was a huge reason that pride came back to K-State football. I was young at the time, still in high school, but, as I remember, we did not use purple in our unis - but navy blue. When he got here he said [paraphrasing here] "Why are we wearing navy blue when our color is PURPLE?!" Will always be indebted to him for that - hence the 'purple pride.' I worked at the Dean of Engineering office from 1968 to 1972 - my first job out of high school. I had to find some purple wool fabric and make myself a purple jumper to wear to work on Fridays! Sure glad it's different now! Even today, I am so proud to see our teams and coaches wear their dark blazers, it bothers me that sometimes they are navy instead of purple. Just sayin'..... But that's what I remember it came out as.I also miss WIBW being our radio "voice"---we made some money going to other outlets, but we gave up one of the strongest radio signals in the country. And it REALLY burns me that they're now the broadcast partner of the Squawks from down river. That is just plain WRONG.12/30 8:27 PM | IP: LoggedGoddardCatAll-Big 12 performerPost #7386In the country near Onaga, KS USAMyFanPageAdd BuddyIgnore Re: Lost KSU slogans Reply"He got a big ole heart".Vince praising a guy who plays hard.12/30 8:36 PM | IP: LoggedCAT69Post #1160MyFanPageAdd BuddyIgnore Re: Lost KSU slogans ReplyClose, Ron 1941, but no cigar - the first win was at Colorado STATE! - a great big WONDERFUL win, nonetheless! Lord there is so much I had forgotten over the years and when you brought those memories back I recalled them too and kept saying to myself, yeah, I recall that and damn I forgot how cool it was back then. For those two young to be there, you have learned some K-State lore that maybe with the help of the purple nation we can try and bring back some of this stuff to a new generation and bring honor to what is our collective history. I love the old, We Are K-State!To Me it brought back, We Are Loud And We Are Proud! We Are K-State! Yes you might say who else would we be, but I see it more as a very proud statement to intimade the other team and fans when it echos off the walls of mighty LHC Bill Snyder Family stadium. We are a purple nation and I love the feeling of being in that sea of purple and the pride I feel, how fortunate I feel to be a K-State fan and to have had the priviledge to graduate from this University! Vince Gibson did so much to bring on pride in our school, and our colors.LHC Bill Snyder brought us the Powercat and picked up on that love of purple and instilled a real sense of pride. Yeah, Purple Power! Purple Pride! I love that Coach Snyder keeps our uniforms the same. We have the best looking colors of any school. Let the ducks and those who do not honor tradition and their histoy have their flashy uniforms. It is not what our family is about.I liked the paw prints and cat scratch shirts and combined with the powercat would be a awesome T-Shirt. By the way I do recall the Gibson girls and I thought they were some of the hotest girls on campus. They were great ambassadors and helped show that we had classy students and a friendly midwestern atmosphere here at KSU. If you have special memories of your time at KSU please share it with us as I really enjoy hearing your memories. Thanks one all for your responses. I do have a Fitz story from a couple years back. He was an alum of my frat and came back for some alumni event. When it was over, I was bringing some of the unused hamburger and hotdog buns to the kitchen, and who was sticking entire upper torso in the fridge with an armful of brat packages and large blocks of sliced cheese than good old Tim Fitzgerald. He probably snuck through the side where they make food truck deliveries. I remember saying something to the effect of "are you serious, dude?" He mumbled something, and scampered off. I brought up this story a while later in one of his threads in a tounge-in-cheek way, and I got a real nasty email about it along with a 3 day timeout. I guess guys that steal cheap food from frat kitchens when they're in their 40s are a bit sensitive about it.
