Brian Gregory getting fired is interesting. They were very bad for 4 and a half years, then they turned it around the second half of this season playing the best basketball they have played under him. They beat the hell out of South Carolina earlier this week. He must have had a NCAA or bust edict which is odd for a program that had no post season under that coach.

Was it NIT title or bust? Why play in the thing in the first place, you could have fired him and had another week to look for a coach. Or maybe they just let him coach and were looking behind the scenes anyway.

Gregory was kind of a strange hire. His teams had finished 11th, 7th, 7th, 2nd, 7th, and 8th in the A10 before he got hired by GT.

My mistake here. Pitt's AD is Scott Barnes, who just took over last April. He hired a search firm headed by Todd Turner, former AD at Vandy who hired Stallings to coach there. Turner recommended Stalling to Barnes via his search firm.

I guess be careful of your new AD and the search firm they hire (or don't hire) is the real lesson here.

See, this is where NCAA transfer rules are cruel. That kid (and the rest of them at Pitt) should be allowed to transfer freely if their coach departs.

he received offers from Oklahoma, Oregon and Wake Forest while at Illinois. Didn't Marquette go after him a few years ago?
