Wrote an op-ed piece a year ago.  And....  Seems like she's still writing manifestos.  (Unless this most recent work was also written a year ago and he/she has some sort of ability to see the future.)
She was asked by several people to further explain her point.

 :dunno:

I and the rest of humanity really really really wish you would stop replying to the fat jackass.  I can somewhat understand Beth feeding the troll, you should know better.  You're helping distract from the real story here.

Beth, you are curb-stomping Fitz here. Running circles around his sexist and baseless traditionalist arguments? Check. Mockingly providing him with the appropriate argument based on the de-gendering qualities of the prescriptive nature of English grammar and the unifying benefits of a threatened culture reforming identity through a shared if gilded heritage? Check mate (<--intentionally separated into two separate words for gender-based irony).

Thanks for posting Beth.

I am with Fatty on this.  While "tradition" can be a bad reason for something, for some of us who grew to use the term, it has a special meaning the EPAW cannot replace.  Maybe it does identify with an underlying problem in soceity, but its a problem so far away from bigger issues that deserve more attention that its a waste of activists efforts to rail against.  In my opinion, Fitz deserves more derision and grassroots campaigning against than EMAW.  He actively chisels away at gender equality where, at worst, EMAW could only slowly erode.

But agree to disagree.  And sorry about jtksu, he's just like that.

Just disgusting the way people are treating Beth. I cannot stand the people that are #SaveEMAW for anything other than the reasons fatty outlined.  But EPAW just doesn't flow off the tongue quite like EMAW.

Beth, good job.  You should submit that little op-ed piece to the collegian or something.

Also, as you have noted, Mr. Fitzgerald is a repugnant pig.  Should you need more examples of his treatment of women, especially those that are college aged and younger, feel feel to read a rather robust account documenting this disrespectful pattern of behavior here http://goEMAW.com/forum/index.php?topic=3732.0

All the best!

Great job, Beth, even though fatty is right.

I had the same "definition of EMAW" exchange that fatty described with conference realignment expert Greg Swaim a month or so back.

Finally, I want to address goEMAW.com directly. After some initial creepiness involving close analysis of pictures of me, the folks that populate the goEMAW.com forums have been open-minded and welcoming. Much of the support for EMAW expressed on this site is based on the idea that EMAW is not an acronym, but a distinct feeling of pride in K-State. They describe this feeling eloquently on their website. I believe, however, that their supposition that EMAW is not an acronym is incorrect. The pictures of Ahearn field house supporting EMAW as a tradition say “Every Man a Wildcat.” Furthermore, if EMAW is merely a reflection of a distinct and independent feeling one gets from being a K-Stater, then why do we need the “M”? A more accurate reflection of that feeling would be a gender-neutral one.

Because we grew up with it being EMAW not EPAW.  You never see "every man a wildcat" uttered anymore. EMAW is just plain silly, and an extension of us KSU fans, and how we survive in an otherwise out-manned conference. We utter EMAW, other big 12 fans laugh and giggle. We love it. It's why is became so popular. Other big 12 fans ask, "what does emaw stand for?" We reply, "you'd never understand."

And unfortunately, I don't think you understand either Beth. I'm not blaming you, the actions on the other side are just as pathetic.

This is about KSU. This is about EMAW. This isn't about you, tim fitzgerald, or anyone else interested in whoring out the meaning of EMAW to further their agendas. Kstate first, individual second.

The word does not literally mean the acronym.  It really doesn't.  Just like the "Wabash Cannonball" dance is nonsensical and not really about trains or a river.  Just like "War Eagle" is nonsensical, despite its unfortunate history.  Just like "Fear the Beard" is nonsensical.  It is a point of pride, because the word represented a certain quirky, humble, knowing aesthetic.  The fact that it blew up was a further point of pride for those that were early adopters.  The fact that many of us are so willing to accept this is that the EMAW wave may well have crested and now people truly are attempting to reclaim the original meaning.  That would be an unfortunate step backward.  I like EPAW because it seems as though this process of reclamation and innovation in language can be replicated.

Breaking away from the 'its not an acronym' talking point (because I don't think anyone outside this website feels that way) is that historically tradition and history are some of the most important aspects of higher education. So institutions will cling to any connection to the past. For example, how KSU along with two other schools claim to be the first land grant school. So the question is do we keep EMAW to bolster our institution at the expense of others' feelings. I don't know.

Also, I am of the belief that a complete switch to EPAW would not be accepted and eventually just kill EMAW and EPAW.

Let them kill EMAW.  you won't stop feeling it.  You won't stop being it.  The word doesn't mean anything and others can't understand it because the word cannot, nor can any word, fully express it.  Words come and go.  I am not on the EPAW wagon, but would be fine with dropping EMAW.  If nothing else, doing so would give this site a chance to coin a new word that would still embody what EMAW is.

I can honestly never remember hearing EMAW once in my time at KSU, but I do agree with the talking point that it is(has become?) more than the acronym.
