C-Merr at the line....24 seconds....
« on: February 18, 2010, 11:07:32 AM »
your thoughts at the time?

I was basically thinking how this couldn't have worked out better for NU and I was thinking about all the mean and awful things I was going to post about Merriewether after he missed one or both FT's.

I was thinking, "Why is that powerespect Ben Boyle moaning about how that is not what Nebraska wanted to do? That's exactly what they wanted to do. We were dumb enough to a) have Merrs in the game, and b) throw it to him."

I literally felt sick to my stomach at that moment.

he was in there for defense, when nub made the three, he was then stuck on the offensive end.
Sometimes I think of the Book of Job and how God likes to really eff with people.

Yeah, after Irving got beat pretty bad on a drive Frank went to the Off-Def substituting with Irving and Merri.

I'm aware of Frank's thinking behind him being in there; what I still have yet to fathom is why people continue to believe Merrs is a good defender. He isn't.

He's not a great athlete and does get beat b/c of it sometimes, but he knows exactly where to be and b/c of that Frank trusts him.  So if Frank has to go to someone to defend a 2/3 in crunch time, Merri will play.

That said, up until the end when Frank started subbing him with Irving, he had played pretty bad.  Ill-advised shot and letting a rebound off a blocked shot go off his hands out of bounds were 2 things that stuck out.

Not nearly as surprising as Sutton's offensive game.

He'll be way better at basketball when he gets a haircut.  Pretty confident about that.

Super ripped, black, short. You'd think he'd be greased lightning, but he's really not that quick.
I once blew clove smoke in a guy's face that cut in front of me in the line to KJ's.

He's not a great athlete and does get beat b/c of it sometimes, but he knows exactly where to be and b/c of that Frank trusts him.  So if Frank has to go to someone to defend a 2/3 in crunch time, Merri will play.

I've seen plenty of times where Energy had his head completely up his ass and had no idea where to be.  All he does, is "try".  And teach lessons, I guess. :flush:

True.  For whatever reason, its pretty clear Frank trusts him in certain situations.

Yea I was gonna blast him good online too. But I digress, he wasn't a bad FT shooter in his limited attempts. That's one thing that struck me earlier on in the season. I remember saying "at least he shoots ok at the line. That's ONE good thing about him." He's been around a long ass time so, he knew what the situation was...did I feel good? Hell no. Anybody but Jake would have made me feel the same.

:bs:  For every charge Merrs takes, he allows 2 layups by being late to help.
