I just had a vision of two people holding hands and having to let go because the statue was in the way.  Then those two people had to step to the right/left of the statue, bumping into the person next to them and causing a chain reaction of bumping that creates extreme havoc and frustration.

negative.  in the scenario you describe, the lovebirds would continue to hold hands while still moving to either side, then turn and face each other and grab hands on the other side.  At this point the statue will be fully encircled and the lovebirds can give the statue a much deserved hug.  Other passers by are encouraged to join in the group hug, although should one not wish to participate, listing to either the right or left should cause no appreciable disruption to traffic flow.
