Looks like it's used by the Cowboys, Texans, Chargers/Rams, and Titans. So, maybe it doesn't suck crap.

Konza*

You are looking live a Saturday night Big12 classic, Kansas State versus Texas Tech here at LHC Bill Snyder Family Stadium! Over the last year the lads over at the agriculture department at Kansas State have developed a new type of turf grass based on the native big blue stem prairie grass! So far the results have been great as the Katz are off to a 8-1 start but tonight the Katz will have to stop the Tech "Prairie Fire Offense" as they come rolling into Manhattan KS at 5-2.

we should have natural grass, like wtf, the soccer team can figure it out but not the football cats?

I would love a natural grass field. We basically dominate all the AG School competitions so I don't know why we can't just spend 5 years creating an indestructible variety of grass that stays green in KS through November.
This has always been my thought. We claim to be a premier AG school, then have artificial turf on the football field. Flood Aggie has a natural grass field, which irritates me even more that we have turf.

I still can't believe teams ever played on the OG carpet on concrete Astroturf. Did any olds on this board ever play football on Astroturf fields? I can't imagine it felt good anytime you got tackled.
Marched on it 2 years as a member of The Pride.  Initially, thought it was cool, but the heat and pounding your legs took.  Can see why so many knees got blown out just playing touch games on it before pregame.  You thought Will Howard struggled with the turf monster...

Does anyone remember the incredible crown we had on the original field?  That thing could drain though.

I had the (mis)fortune of playing a no-pads football game on that turf in the summer of 1996 and it was absolutely awful. I would have rather played on a dirt field because the concrete under that half an inch layer of knee scraping "turf" was unforgiving. And, yes, the crown was insane. I'm not sure it's correct, but I have it stuck in my brain that if you measured the height difference from the top of the crown to the sideline that it was about a foot.

That turf and others like it from the 60s/70s/80s are no doubt responsible for all sorts of injuries that would have otherwise been much milder on natural grass (or even turf 2.0).

Made it down to the sidelines at OU in the early 80's (OU/USC) as a high school senior and they were more extreme than that. I remember looking across to the other sideline and not seeing people's knees. Could have made a great Dorf On Football video.

Fun(ny) fact: Since Wagner field was the only football field I had been on as a youth, and the crown was so massive, I thought all football fields were built like that. So when people used the term "run downhill" I thought it meant toward the sideline because at K-State, it was literally downhill.

need dax to tell me what type of turf we’re getting ourselves into

First of all, wow.

The Field Turf fields in the stadium and practice facility were only in for a year or two.  This will be the 4th playing surface in ten years for BSFS.

My first thought is . . . both my firewall and Firefox hates the Hellas website.   :frown:

I have nerded out and watched the way that surface plays closely and if memory serves it has nominal "splash out" of infill as compared to FieldTurf and AstroPlay, the previous surfaces of the last 10 years.  If that's truly the case, and it is a major marketing point for them, expect to see a lot fewer infill granules on uni's and going into eyes . . . which is a good thing IMO.  As I recall we had guys missing plays last year because they had to go off to get their eyes flushed.

It also tends to hold up better aesthetically. First concern is, will the better aesthetic appearance impact how the surface performs for our players and are you substituting aesthetics for play ability, cushion and impact reduction?

But on the flip side, one must realize that AstroTurf/AstroPlay and FieldTurf built their markets on longevity and a brutal legal battle between each other years ago, and these newer players may have a superior product.

Lots of sub systems coming up on 10 years of service:

BSFS Lights - Gene has mentioned this specifically

NEZ Videoboards - Some LED panels in one of them have issues

Videoboard/Scoreboard and lights and sound in Bramlage

The Videoboard in Bramlage is a Panasonic - and Panasonic electronics are like a 2004 Toyota Camry that gets regular oil changes and maintenance.

That's about $10 million dollars in systems entering EOL/EOS time frames.

NEZ boards def need some attention.

Not sure I guess why we need sound/board update in Bramlage. Thought that was recently done?

We may not need for Bramlage - but they are 10 years old this year.

One big difference obviously, is one set of electronics is in climate control, and one obviously is not.

Didn't realize they were 10 years old at this point, time flies. At least when I was there Saturday nothing screamed to me "replace me soon" not did it look or feel dated. If anything felt that is the probably forever punted Bramlage itself. It clearly is becoming more dated and all the updates they do taking away seats and the concourse updates while nice honestly made the bones feel even older. The bench seating definitely makes it feel high schooly.

Agreed on the climate part, death of electronics.

Who is installing/providing the new turf?  In the past they had a contract with Mammoth.

As far as the video boards go, they usually have 5-year warranties from Daktronics.  Dak traditionally has had the market for outdoor video walls with a direct sell to the end-user model, but they do not have the best quality product.  Each wall usually comes with 10-15% spares for swapping out bad boards.  At this point I would assume the walls are ready to get upgraded due to lack of spares and the brightness of the LEDs are ~30% less from its original brightness.

I didn't believe it either, but I went and looked, the press release on the upgrades in Bramlage came out in 2014.

The new turf company has their own construction company apparently. There was talk in the On3 forum of some issues with Mammoth's installation. Something about how they didn't install the infill correctly. I have no idea if that's valid or not.

I have often wondered about Daktronics quality control.
