Can't match the story of Walter Payton being on the bus and bound for Kansas State when the Jackson State coach suddenly showed up at the last minute and convinced him to stay.

Walter was only a one star on Rivals at the time, so we didn't even notice. He would have been a nice pick up.

lol. yeah, I always heard it as he got on the wrong bus and ended up at Jackson State.

There was also something about freshman football with him as well.  Payton's freshman year was the first year freshman were allowed on the varsity team.  The Jackson State coach told him that as a freshman he would be given the same opportunity to play as everyone else and he wasn't sure he'd be given the same chance as KSU.  Freshman playing was a new thing and no one knew how coaches were going to react.

payton's brother was the golf coach at jackson st.  he was the one that got him, not the fball coach.  i mean i guess the coach told him to or whatever, but it was all family loyalty.
